Tony Blair Scuttles for Cover as Green Zone and Basra Come Under Mortar Attack

Politics / Iraq War May 19, 2007 - 01:17 PM GMT

Politics

Tony Blair made his final farewell visit to Iraq today as British Prime Minister. The Invasion of Iraq is seen as the primary reason of why he is now being forced from office. As in the past no apologies were forthcoming on the disastrous decision to follow the Bush Administration into Iraq in 2003 on the basis of flimsy if not completely false propaganda.

Instead Tony Blair repeated the positive spin that things are getting better, much as Tony Blair has uttered during the past 4 years. To illustrate the delusion between fact and spin, firstly whilst visiting the Iraqi Prime Minister, the heavily fortified Green Zone came under Motor attack, several rounds fell into the green zone injuring some. Targets hit included the British Embassy. Then later in Basra whilst talking to British troops mortar rounds fell on the Basra base forcing everyone to scuttle for cover including Tony Blair.

Meanwhile Britain continues to decrease its troop presence in Iraq, whilst increasing the presence in Afghanistan.

In earlier news, the MOD decided not to send Prince Harry to Iraq, deeming it to be far too dangerous for Harry and the troops who would invite insurgent attacks given the potential propaganda victory should anything have happened to Harry.

So far on Tony Blair's doomed decision to invade Iraq, nearly 150 British troops have died, and countless hundreds of thousands of Iraqi's

Regardless of the many domestic successes of Tony Blair's premiership, which include continuous economic growth and peace in Northern Ireland, he will by and large be remembered for making the worst foreign policy decision since Suez, and also his inability to recognise when he is wrong, in many ways similar to President Bush though delivered in a much more intellectual manner!

As Jimmy Carter said on Tony Blair's attitude to George Bush was "abominable, blind, subservient" and that the "UK's almost undeviating support for the ill-advised policies of President Bush in Iraq had been had been a major tragedy for the world". As Bush used Blair's support as the green light and embark on the disastrous invasion of Iraq.

We will have to wait to see if Gordon Brown wants history to also remember him for supporting a doomed war in Iraq.
