Best Financial Markets Analysis ArticleDavid Miliband the favourite and leading candidate for the whole of the Labour leadership election campaign saw his victory go up in smoke as the big unions (Unite and GMB) piled in with David's left leaning brother Ed, after the union voters had been bolstered and pumped via anti-cuts propaganda earlier in the month at the TUC congress.

The results could not have been more dramatic as despite David Miliband winning on the first ballot, he failed to reach the 50% minimum to achieve an outright victory which led to a series of cliffhanger rounds with the each of the candidates with the least votes second voter preferences being allocated to the remaining candidates until one reached more than 50% of the total votes, and thus the nation watched on as Ed Miliband round after round whittled David's lead away into the final round to just pip him to the post by 50.65% against 49.35% for David Miliband.
