In a surprise announcement Ali Akbar Salehi in an interview with Iran’s Press TV on Wednesday said all the efforts are aimed at nuclear sufficiency in production and exploration.
Iran’s Atomic Energy (AEOI) Director said, ‘we have also discovered good veins at the Gachin uranium mine in [the southern port city of] Bandar Abbas and are preparing for extractions.’ Earlier he said a new phase of exploration has begun to discover further uranium deposits in central and southern parts of the country. ‘Since launching the Bushehr nuclear power plant, we have prioritized uranium exploration to be able to answer our [fuel] needs fully and domestically,’ Salehi announced earlier.
There are two main uranium mines currently operating in the Yazd Province near Saghand and Persian Gulf region of Bandar Abbas. Analysts expect additional uranium deposits to be discovered in central and southern parts of Iran.
