Labour Party Appoints Shaun Wright as South Yorkshire's First Police and Crime Commissioner
Local / Sheffield Jun 20, 2012 - 01:38 AM GMTThe Labour party has spoken, South Yorkshire's first Police and Crime Commissioner will be the relatively unknown Rotherham Labour councillor Shaun Wright, who outmanoeuvred the publically more recognisable figure of former Chief Constable Med Hughes and other candidates by in some cases using tactics such as implying endorsements from unions, MP's and other party structures on leaflets etc, that he either did not have or had already been explicitly given to another candidates.
The November 15th public election is a mere formality as it will be for most of the other 40 regional police force PCC elections, as the May local elections illustrated that the strength of the Labour vote will be such that for places such as South Yorkshire candidates of other parties may as well not even bother standing given that Labour has very high probability of winning the vote no matter who they put up as a candidate.
The Conservatives and Liberal Democrats at mid-term are at their most unpopular amongst the general public, so Labour expect the voters of the peoples republic of South Yorkshire to turn out zombie style to mark X against the Labour candidate.
At the end of the day the Police and Crime Commissioners represent a huge own goal by the party of Law and Order as they have effectively handed over control of most of England and Wale's Police Forces to the Labour Party, many of whom have no relevant experience and were against the creation of the posts, but now more than willing to claim the annual £100k salaries and accompanying perks.
