Inland Revenue Extends Tax Filing Deadline to Midnight 1st Feb 08

Personal_Finance / UK Tax & Budget Jan 31, 2008 - 02:49 PM GMT

By: Shahla_Walayat

Personal_Finance Due to technical difficulties which included the crash of the online self assessment filing system, the Inland Revenue announced earlier today that the penalty free deadline has been extended to midnight 1st of february. However as I highlighted in yesterdays article - UK Tax Filing Deadlines - 31st Jan 2008, 1st Feb 2008 and 4th Feb 2008! , earlier court rulings had already ensured that people could submit tax returns up to midnight on 1st of Feb without incurring the £100 penalty.

A quirk of the calendar also suggests that people have the possibility of delivering postal returns to the Inland revenue by 7.30am on Monday the 4th of February i.e. as long as the returns are in the Inland Revenue Letter box on start of business.

The full Inland Revenue statement :

SA Online filing service problems

HMRC's Self Assessment Online filing service has experienced technical difficulties today, which has meant that some tax payers have experienced difficulties filing online. The system is now rapidly returning to normal levels of service. A record number of 3.6 million taxpayers have already successfully filed online.

HMRC takes any disruption of service very seriously and to reflect this no-one who files electronically or by paper by midnight Friday 1 February 2008 will face a penalty.

We very much regret any inconvenience this may have caused.

A test of the Inland revenue portal just prior to posting of this article resulted in fully operational and working system.
