Best Financial Markets Analysis ArticleExpectations for disastrously low turnouts for England and Wales PCC elections have materialised as the general public whole heartedly rejects the policy for political interference in British policing. Turnouts are averaging at just 15%, with the winning candidates typically being elected with less than 7% of the electorate and some with less than 4%. Additionally many of the westminister dinosaurs such as John Prescott were rejected by the electorate, that also saw more than ten times the number of spoilt ballots as is usually the case at UK elections.

Voters reject many of the west minister dinosaurs put up by the 3 major parties such as John Prescott and instead elect Independant's, where there was a choice of an Independant candidate.

PCC Jobs for the Boys

The public never asked for nor wanted Police and Crime Commissioner Elections, which were purely conjured into existence by the coalition government with a view towards giving jobs to the boys, with expectations that the vast majority of the posts would go to westminster dinosaurs as lucrative retirement packages at tax payers expense. The Labour party that opposed the PCC's recognised that their candidates stood a good chance of winning most of the posts so went into overdrive late last year in putting forward it's own collection of westminister dinosaurs such as John Prescott whom voters rejected.

The PCC elections were flawed right from the outset because of the extremely large £5000 deposit required to stand that is ten times the amount required to stand as a candidate for Member of Parliament, which has resulted in the exclusion of many far more suitable independant candidates.

A Disaster for the Police

The PCC's will turn out to be a disaster for the police forces because there will be a constant battle between PCC's and Chief Constables as they will have completely different priorities, for instance the PPC's primary priority will be to get re-elected and therefore election promises will count, whilst the Chief Constables will try to get their jobs done with the least interference as possible from the PCC's, as was the case with the Police Authorities, which were always just weak entities that tended to be subservient to the whims of Chief Constables.

Annul Illegitimate PCC Elections?

The bottom line is that the winning candidates at best will have votes from just 7% of the electorate or that 93% will not have voted for them, therefore the results lack any real legitimacy, which I am sure that Chief Constables will remind PCC's of whenever conflicts arise.

The coalition government should recognise their gross error of judgement and make all of the PCC elections null and void, and then take another look at the whole processes's involved, including reduction of the deposit required to stand from £5k to £500, and holding the elections at the same time as local elections which would more than double the voter turnout.

In the final analysis, it would have been far better to go down the route of employing Police Commissioners on the basis of merit i.e. persons with experience in accounting, auditing, analysis, journalism and the law who actually are competent enough to hold the police to account because as we keep discovering the police are only human, they are just as capable of engaging in criminal conspiracies such as the Hillsborough disaster conspiracy as any other section of the population. But career politicians are definitely not the answer, who are only good at talking at length without actually saying anything meaningful.
