Creating content is one of the best ways to generate traffic to your website. Doing so can lead to more subscribers and customers, making content a necessity to survive in the digital marketplace.
While many business owners, marketers, and webmasters understand the value of content, not everyone is doing it well. Some may be doing it well but are not delivering enough content to keep their target audience coming back for more.
Do you know how many posts the Washington Post published on a daily basis? 1,200 according to data generated from research and monitoring tool BuzzSumo. Daily Mail, on the other hand, published 849 posts daily. Considering that both are news platforms, publishing as many content should not be a problem.
But what about blogs and business websites?
Since writing hundreds of posts per day can be a waste of time and budget, the goal would be to generate traffic with quality content optimized for a particular target audience.
They are different solutions to creating better content to increase organic traffic and conversions. Some strategies work for both media and non-media websites.
How to Create Content That Connects
Know your target audience
When you know who you're writing for, the easier it is to engage, personalize, and inform your audience. The goal is to create content for the right people. What better way to do this than to perform audience analysis?
Because when you create content that connects to your target market, you can expect increase conversions.
So ask yourself the following questions:
- Who are your current customers?
- Who are your competitors?
- What would customer gain when they choose your business over your competitors?
- What problems do the product or service you provide solves?
- What benefits can you offer your target market?
Define your marketing goal for content creation
Content can be used in many ways:
- Measure success of a marketing campaign
- Generate and/or increase website traffic
- Acquire new subscribers
- Increase conversions
- App downloads
- Video views
- Social shares engagement
- Generate and/or increase sales
According to entrepreneur and marketer Seth Godin, “We need to start by understanding what this [content] is for?” He further explains that your strategy for content should be like building a ship, you need to know where the ship will sail before putting together planks of wood.
Find out what questions your target audience have and provide an answer
Do you have any idea what your target market is searching for? If you analyze the billion online searches made every day, you will be able to understand your audience and what they search for.
People interested in making money from text, for example, are searching specifically for “texting for sales” and “SMS lead generation”. So, if you create content that outlines how to use text to close more sales, you will bring in more organic traffic and convert more viewers because you answered their question.
Here's what you need to do to find your target audience's questions:
- Use tools to dig deep into your audience's history. You can use google trends, AdWords Keyword Planner, or SEMrush keyword research tool.
- Read blogs from competitors. This is especially valuable if you know they are ahead of you. In this case, you don't need to do all the work, you just need to mimic your competition.
- Go to the source and talk to your customers. Who knows better what they're looking for than the customers themselves?
Write content that is 10 times better
According to Moz founder and SEO wizard Rand Fishkin, creating something 10 times better than the best piece of content out there will list your content higher in search results. When this happens, organic traffic will grow.
So instead of just providing data and a historical breakdown about “how much people use their phones”, for example, add actionable steps.
The process in your content creation should include:
- Stating the question or problem
- Presenting your target audience with available opinion or research
- Providing a description of what all the research or opinion means
- Providing additional resources within the content, such as links and images
- Outline actionable next steps
Create content that is easy to engage with
Make sure to create easy-to-consume content by keeping paragraphs shorter, with four lines or fewer.
Then:
- Use bullet points
- Use sub headers
- Pull quotes
- Use charts and graphs
- Add videos and other elements to break up texts
- Use pictures and GIFs
Adding new and different elements in your content will encourage viewers to consume more of what you are offering.
