Alibaba IPO is Like Investing in Amazon in 1995 / Companies / Tech Stocks

By: Money_Morning

Kyle Anderson writes: On Nov. 11, Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. set a company record for most sales in a 24-hour period when $5.7 billion was exchanged over its network of websites.

That's nearly four times the $1.46 billion in online sales logged on the United States' largest online shopping day of the year - "Cyber Monday" - in 2012.

Twitter Bubble Price Crash? An Ad Per Tweet Solution? / Companies / Tech Stocks

By: Nadeem_Walayat

Twitter that has yet to make a single dime of profit was floated Thursday on the NYSE at $26 per share and immediately saw its stock price soar to close up 73% on the day at $44.90, valuing the company at more than $24 billion.

The obvious comparison for what could happen next to the Twitter's stock price is the Facebook example, which peaked on its IPO day as many rushed to bet heavily on one of the social networking backbones of the internet, dreaming of monetizing on its then 900 million users.

Explaining Amazon's Stock Price Performance / Companies / Tech Stocks

By: Charles_Carnevale

Amazon (AMZN) is a stock that seems to defy conventional wisdom about how a stock is, or should be, valued. Fundamental investors, like yours truly, recognize and respect the importance of the earnings and price relationship. Moreover, I will be so bold as to emphatically state that in the long run profitability (earnings) will be the primary determinant of a businesses' fair value, any business. However, my bold statement is predicated on the longer run. In the short run it is often a truth that all bets are off.

This leads me to a few words about market efficiency. Academics supportive of modern finance theory argue for an efficient market hypothesis (EMH). Investopedia offers the following definition of the Efficient Market Hypothesis (emphasis added mine):

4D Printing Profit Potential Makes Me Drool / Companies / Tech Stocks

By: Money_Morning

Keith Fitz-Gerald writes: After more than 30 years in the markets, I've seen all kinds of new technologies that are supposed to change the world. Most are pumped by little-known companies with overly hyped marketing, aggressive underwriters, and little more than vaporware. To say I'm jaded would be an understatement.

But I ran across something recently that positively made my mouth drop.

By: Bloomberg

Billionaire investor, Carl Icahn speaks to Bloomberg Television's Trish Regan this afternoon on "Street Smart" and said on Apple:

  • Apple buyback would be 'no-brainer'
  • "We are not leaving Apple, we are there to stay"
  • "Apple needs a board that goes in and does a huge buyback. We are saying that. I respect Tim Cook and I expect to talk to him again very shortly and I think he is doing a very fine job."
  • Apple should buy back $150 Billion in Stock
  • To critics of the Apple buyback: "[they] have not bothered to read the balance sheet or maybe does not know how to read a balance sheet."
  • Tim Cook believes the stock is very Cheap
  • Not looking for a quick turn in Apple

Time to Invest in "Ultra-Broadband" Tek Stocks Just Like Google / Companies / Tech Stocks

By: Money_Morning

Michael A. Robinson writes: They used to call it dark fiber...

It was the 1990s. Telecom firms plowed billions into fiber optic networks to prepare for the coming explosion in traffic for the web, wireless systems, and computer networks.

Turns out, the supposed "gold rush" was just a few years ahead of its time. So, much of the fiber optic systems sat unused. They were quite literally dark - no light, no data, was shining down the high-speed cables.

Apple’s Attempt to Enter Emerging Markets a Blunder? / Companies / Tech Stocks

By: Profit_Confidential

George Leong writes: When the next-generation Apple Inc. (NASDAQ/AAPL) “iPhone 5S” and “iPhone 5C” were launched in mid-September, the company reported record sales over its first weekend of selling.

But there was a problem: the majority of the sales were for the iPhone 5S, while sales of the iPhone 5C lagged. The problem was the cost of the plastic-cased 5C; at around $100.00 with a two-year contract, the “cheaper” version simply cost too much, especially for the emerging markets like China, where Apple had high hopes for the iPhone 5C.

Some People Will Get Stinking Rich on These Tech Devices / Companies / Tech Stocks

By: Money_Morning

Michael A. Robinson writes: You've heard stories about him before - the savvy stock analyst who gets his hands on the hottest new smartphone before Verizon's first bulk order ships... only to smash it to bits so he can see what's inside.

The idea is simple: If you know which company manufactures a small - but key - component in the product, you can invest in it and make a bundle.

Big Data - How the New "New Money" Will Be Made / Companies / Tech Stocks

By: Money_Morning

Tara Clarke writes: If you're an investor, there's a term you need to know: Big Data.

Data - just the word itself - is the most boring abstraction in the world. The meaning of the word "data" itself is, well, meaninglessness. That's the point.

Obama Wades In on the Apple-Samsung Patent War / Companies / Tech Stocks

By: Money_Morning

Greg Madison writes: President Barack Obama added an unexpected twist to the patent wars when he took the extraordinarily rare step of vetoing the International Trade Commission's own trade sanctions against Apple Inc. (Nasdaq: AAPL) last week.

The trade commission had ruled that Apple violated some of Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd's patents, and the commission was set to ban outright several key Apple products, such as the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, and the iPad 2 and 3G models - all sold by AT&T Inc. (NYSE:T), among others.

Improve The Productivity Of Your Dividend Growth Portfolio With Technology Stocks / Companies / Tech Stocks

By: Charles_Carnevale

Introduction and General Observations of the Information Technology Sector

Dividend growth investors seeking quality dividend growth stocks to fund their retirement portfolios have not historically looked to the Information Technology sector.  Traditionally, the Information Technology sector has been associated with higher growth and higher risk. However, in addition to higher growth, many technology companies are also very cyclical in nature. Another common attribute for tech companies is how they have traditionally utilized their capital.  In order to finance their high-growth needs, the majority of Information Technology companies have traditionally not paid dividends. Instead, they used their capital to fund future growth.  However, another contributing factor to the no dividend policy of Information Technology companies was the nascent nature of this industry.

Five Reasons Apple Stock is a Buy / Companies / Tech Stocks

By: Money_Morning

David Zeiler writes: With Apple Inc. (Nasdaq: AAPL) bears feeling vindicated by the company's fall from grace and shares hovering in the $400 range, it might sound like a stretch to say Apple stock is a buy.

But given all that's happened, AAPL at $400 is a better deal than it may appear.

"It's obviously been hit, but it's bounced. It's held up," said Money Morning Capital Wave Strategist Shah Gilani. Pointing to the recent volatility in the markets, Gilani said, "The markets have been hit really hard and Apple has held up beautifully."

By: Money_Morning

Michael A. Robinson writes: The world's largest semiconductor firm's stock has become one of high tech's biggest value traps, which isn't a great place to be for stockholders.

But things are changing and tech investors - all investors -- should take heed.

First let's look at what it means to be a value trap.
