The Biggest Investment Opportunity the World Has Ever Known / Companies / Investing 2013

By: Investment_U

Alexander Green writes: Let me begin with an apology and a small confession. This column really isn’t about “the biggest investment opportunity the world has ever known.”

However, it is about the easiest, most consistent method ever devised for making money in stocks. And you are free to use it to virtually print money in your brokerage account.

Investors Beware Higher Interest Rates Looming / Stock-Markets / Investing 2013

By: InvestmentContrarian

George Leong writes: The rate on a 30-year fixed mortgage has been creeping up higher and just broke the four-percent threshold. This is a telltale sign that higher financing rates are on the horizon.

While there’s still hope that the Federal Reserve will hold off on reducing its bond buying at next week’s Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting, the reality is that the money party is coming to an end.

High and Low Quality Stocks Beat the S&P 500 Index / Companies / Investing 2013

By: Richard_Shaw

High quality and low quality stock performance rotate in the short-term, and they both beat the S&P 500.

High quality stocks generally do better in down markets or periods of uncertainty or pessimism.  Low quality stocks generally do better in up markets or periods of greater clarity or optimism.

Higher quality stocks have better risk adjusted returns, higher yields and better dividend growth.

The Best Stock Investments to Beat Ben Bernanke's War on Savers / Companies / Investing 2013

By: Money_Morning

Garrett Baldwin writes: For the last four years, ordinary Americans have struggled to rebuild their wealth in the wake of the Great Financial Crisis.

Last week, the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis reported that the average U.S. household has recovered only 45% of its wealth lost during the recession.

Of course, the Federal Reserve won't acknowledge that its Chairman, Ben Bernanke, has been a principle driver in the underperformance of the middle class' return to financial normalcy. Bernanke has removed incentives for anyone to keep their dollars in a savings account by knocking interest rates to near-record lows.

Investing in Recession Proof Leading Brands Stocks / Companies / Investing 2013

The Volatility Is Risk Myth

If you were to take the essence of most people’s beliefs and understanding about investing in common stocks, or the stock market for that matter, and turn it into a movie, I believe it would have to be labeled under the category science fiction.  In other words, in my experience, most of what people believe about common stocks or the stock market is predicated more on opinion than on fact.  But even more importantly, it is predicated on opinions that are driven by strong emotional responses.  Consequently, I believe that what most people feel that they know about investing in stocks is based more on myth than truth.

Perhaps the biggest myth of all is the perception that investing in common stocks is a risky endeavor.  Whether you are listening to professional or lay investors alike, it is widely accepted that stocks are a risky asset class.  Personally, I have found that the true risk of investing in the equity asset class rests more in the attitudes, beliefs and actions of the investors themselves, than it does with the asset class.  In other words, how people think about common stocks is actually often more risky than the common stocks actually are.  Unfortunately, most people think investing in stocks is risky; I don’t, as long as it’s done intelligently and correctly.

What Stock Investors Should Do Now as the End of QE Nears / Companies / Investing 2013

By: Money_Morning

Diane Alter writes: If investors needed a reminder that global stock market rallies have been goosed by the Fed's lose monetary measures, they got it.

On Wednesday, U.S. equities went on roller-coaster ride.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average, up 155 points before FOMC Chairman Ben Bernanke said the Fed could soon begin to tap the brakes, ended the day down 80.41, or off by 0.5%,.

U.S. Economy Getting Better; Should You Jump into Cyclical Stocks? / Companies / Investing 2013

By: DailyGainsLetter

Moe Zulfiqar writes: As the risks in the stock market increase, investors most often run towards defensive stocks. The main reason behind this phenomenon is that companies that are considered defensive provide investors with a stream of dividends, even when the markets, as a whole, crumble. They are generally strong players in their industry, with healthy market shares and stable earnings year-over-year.

Why Knowing the Currency Risk Can Pay Off In Investing / Stock-Markets / Investing 2013

By: DailyGainsLetter

Moe Zulfiqar writes: Portfolio management is the key to growing savings over time. The implication behind this is that if an investor manages their portfolio regularly, adjusting asset classes based on market and economic conditions, they can reduce their risk and earn a decent rate of return, as well as peace of mind.

That said, investors need to look out for many different types of risks. To name a few, investors need to protect their portfolio from market fluctuations, reduce industry-specific risks, and keep in mind the rate of inflation.

The Best Market Sector to Invest in Right Now! / Companies / Investing 2013

By: Money_Morning

Martin Hutchinson writes: I try to keep a balanced portfolio, or at least one that isn't entirely concentrated in one sector.

I like a lot of international holdings, especially from East Asia (but not particularly China itself) and I try to have at least some representation even in sectors that bore me utterly, like consumer packaged goods - Procter & Gamble (NYSE: PG). I know you've increased your dividend every year since 1954, which is a magnificent achievement, but I STILL can't get excited about your business!

Investors Scrambling for Low Risk Yields / Stock-Markets / Investing 2013

By: Don_Miller

With the Fed buying $85 billion in government debt every month, effectively holding interest rates far below the rate of inflation, many seniors are struggling to make ends meet. It is no wonder the Dow has hit an all-time high. But for the stock market, where else can we expect to find any return?

How to Profit From 46 Million American's on Food Stamps / Companies / Investing 2013

By: Money_Morning

David Mamos writes: With over 46 million Americans on food stamps, price-conscious shoppers have been flocking to the discount stores.

It's a profitable and steady niche in what has become a "food stamp economy."

It's lead by the big-box discounters such as Wal-Mart (NYSE: WMT) on one end and a trio of high-rising "dollar" stores at the other --Family Dollar Stores (NYSE: FDO), Dollar Tree (NASDAQ: DLTR) and Dollar General (NYSE:DG).

Why Hedge Funds Are a Lousy Investment / Companies / Investing 2013

By: Money_Morning

Martin Hutchinson writes: The one thing you can guarantee when investing in hedge funds is, the managers are going to get rich...even if the investors don't.

Don't get suckered into believing you will be taking your investing strategy to the next level. The difference between reality and perception is stark and the only people sure to win are the managers themselves.

Simple Strategy for Outperforming Hedge Funds / Stock-Markets / Investing 2013

By: DailyGainsLetter

Moe Zulfiqar writes: There’s often a debate among Main Street investors that institutional investors—more specifically, hedge funds—can provide better returns compared to managing the money by themselves. The main reason for this is that institutional investors have resources: for example, access to data, the ability to perform in-depth analysis, and so on and so forth.
