Barack Obama proved yesterday why November's presidential election will end in a 50-state sweep. John McCain has no chance. It's like George Bush climbing into the ring with Mike Tyson; one thundering left hook and the Crawford Caligula would be sprawled across the canvas in a pool of his own blood. "No mas"! The same fate awaits the crabby senator from Arizona. The polls are skewed to look like there's a political horse-race going on. There isn't. It's a complete rout. There's one well-toned thoroughbred striding from venue to venue electrifying the ever-increasing throngs, and one doddering, old mare limping towards the glue-factory. Urgent Action Required to Prevent Passing of Bailout Economic Madness Bill / Politics / US Politics

This week, the US Congress overwhelmingly passed HR3221. Perhaps as early as today, this measure will be taken up in the Senate. The President has pledged his blessing of the measure as well. While I am sure that there are many folks who are happy to see this relief package, I am not one of them. Touted as cornerstones of this bill are tax credits for first-time homebuyers and reduced property taxes for select others. However, this is just window dressing. Potential recipients of the ‘benefits' of this package must understand that they are not getting anything for free. What is given to the left hand will be taken from the right perhaps through higher taxes or perhaps through inflation. Most likely, though, it will be both.Read full article... Read full article...

I know it's hard to believe but Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson is a Republican. It was especially hard to keep that in mind during his appearances on the Sunday talk shows this weekend. His stated mission was to garner support for the bailout plans of Fannie Mae (NYSE: FNM ) and Freddie Mac (NYSE: FRE ). I hoped that he, being of the party that supports free markets, would have instead asked why the government is involved in the real estate market in the first place. I preferred that Treasury would have repudiated any further association with the GSEs and cease to allow them to raise new capital with the backing of the government.Read full article... In order to deal with Obama's economic illiteracy we need to grasp some fundamental economic theory. Let's begin with Obama's ridiculous belief that increasing government expenditure and taxation can stimulate growth. First and foremost, economic growth is a process of capital accumulation. It is this process that raises real wage rates and thus living standards.
Now Keynes gave us Y=C+I+G (this is for a closed economy). It can be seen from this statement that if investment falls national income can still continue to rise so long as aggregate spending rises. This leads to the absurd conclusion that a 100 per cent profits tax would have no effect on GDP so long as it was offset by an increase in one or both remaining variables.

This ritual is invariably performed in the name of party unity. It doesn't matter if the candidate is a smooth-talking politician who's willing to toss his Pastor of 20 years overboard for a few awkward comments, or whether he refuses to defend basic civil liberties like the 4th amendment's right to privacy. Party conventions are less than two months off, and already rumors are circulating. When the Democrats hold theirs from August 25 - 28, Obama is the virtually sure nominee. According to some, however, things aren't settled for Republicans a week later. Presumptive nominee John McCain may not be as certain as most people think, and why so should be asked. For one thing, he trails in the polls (including in key battleground states like Florida, Ohio and Pennsylvania) but not enough to be worrisome (in most of them), and the latest June Reuters/Zogby one is typical. It shows Obama ahead by about five points, and in recent months he's been up by from 6 to 10 and in one poll down six to McCain.

America's cities and towns will soon fill with parades, fireworks, and barbecues in celebration of the Fourth of July, the 232nd birthday of America. But one hopes that the speeches will contain fewer bromides and more attention to exactly what is being celebrated. The Fourth of July is Independence Day, but America's leaders and intellectuals have been trying to move us further and further away from the meaning of Independence Day, away from the philosophy that created this country.

The first decade of the new millennium—the 2000s—produced a catastrophe for the U.S. when the Supreme Court designated my former Yale classmate George W. Bush as president in December 2000.
Democrat Albert Gore had won the popular vote in the November election but was behind in electoral votes. The controversy centered on Florida , where the official tally showed Bush the winner by a narrow margin, but where the Court decided a complete recount might leave the nation with an undecided election for too long. It later turned out that many eligible Florida voters had been improperly excluded from voting by partisan state election officials.
