Sheffield General Election and Local City Council Results 2010, Labour Repels Liberal Democrats

Going into the General and Local Elections, the battle for Sheffield's council seats and Central Constituency was expected to be extremely tight between Labour and the Liberal Democrats as a consequence of the Lib-Dems national 10% surge in the polls from 20% to 30%, putting Labour into third place in many opinion polls which risked Labour losing as many as a 1/3rd of it's city councilors and the Central Parliamentary Constituency.

However, as witnessed in the general election result across the UK, the Lib Dem poll surge evaporated into thin air on election night in most areas of the country as Labour managed to hold onto the at risk Central constituency and even add 3 councillor's as the cities traditional Labour tribe frightened by the prospects of losing seats to the Liberal Democrats turned out in force to ensure that no seats were lost in Sheffield to the Liberal Democrats.

Sheffield City Council

Labours strong local election performance echoed right across the city with Labour not only holding onto existing seats but winning 3 back from the Liberal Democrats and Greens which leaves the City Council in no overall control.

Sheffield Central Constituency - Labour HOLD

The central constituency proved to be a close battle between Labour and the Liberal Democrats which after a recount came in as a labour hold on a majority of just 165 votes as the following results illustrate:

Sheffield Hallam Constituency - Liberal Democrat HOLD
Nick Clegg voiced his disappointment as the Lib Dem's lack of performance in Sheffield matched the national failure to even hold on to their existing seats total of 62 by losing 5 MP's. He also criticised Sheffield's incompetent public sector that failed to allow several hundred people the right to vote despite queuing for as long as 3 hours - "That should never, ever happen again in our democracy," Nick Clegg said.
