U.S. Housing Busts and Obama's Report To Congress

Housing-Market / US Housing Feb 19, 2012 - 06:33 AM GMT

By: DK_Matai

Housing-Market

The 2012 Economic Report of the US President published by the Whitehouse for the Congress contains a startling chart in chapter 4 "Stabilizing and Healing the Housing Market". Red = The Great Unwind: start 2007; Blue = New England bust: start 1989; Orange = California bust: start 1990; and Green = The Great Depression: start 1930. What does comparing housing busts in US history suggest?

1. Isn't the present US property bust deeper than any experienced before?

2. Are we about one year away from the bottom compared to the bottoms of the previous busts?

3. Could house prices fall further in the US before they start recovering demonstrably in a few years?

4. What does this portend for the US economy and New York centric financial markets in 2012 and beyond?

5. What does this portend for the global economy including Europe and the emerging giants like China, India and Brazil as well as financial markets in 2012 and beyond?
