ew Russian President Elected Medvedev Putin

Even before the polls close, there is no doubt that Dmitry Medvedev will be the new President of Russia. The only information that remains outstanding is the margin of his victory.

By all accounts, Dmitry Medvedev´s landslide victory could collect around 70 percent of the votes, but may fall a little short of Putin´s 71.3 percent victory in 2004 (but not by very much!)

It is true that some "candidates" didn´t make it to the big race, but even if they had, they wouldn´t have received enough support to get in the top three. The only other serious contender for President is Communist leader Gennady Zyuganov, but the best he is likely to achieve is 15 percent of the votes.

There is still some support for the Communist party, but these are mainly old people who felt comfortable in the old Soviet system (a less complicated life with easier working conditions). Zyuganov is perhaps a typical example of a leader from the past (much too serious looking and rarely offering a smile). If the Communists ever wish to see a change in their fortunes, they will need a Russian equivalent of Tony Blair to change their image. But even that may not be enough.

Vladimir Zhirinovsky, Liberal Democratic Party Leader, will pick up most of the remaining votes, but I´m sure he would be the first to admit that he never had a chance. However, taking part helps to keep his "celebrity" status alive, and this is the main objective for this very interesting character!

There will of course be the usual accusations of vote rigging, but the United States have that problem too. Unfortunately, the leaders in the US have this strange idea that it is OK for them to do it, but not others!

The most important thing, at the end of the day, is that Russia will have a leadership that will benefit the people. Medvedev and Putin will be working together to maintain the gains that Russia has made over the last 8 years and do all they can to improve on this.

Russia will continue to fight hard against the growing ambitions of those in power in the United States and Britain (I don´t mean the politicians), and will block any future attempts to destabilize Russia. This may mean some "restrictions" being placed on the public, but sometimes this is necessary to achieve a long term goal. The alternative perhaps is to see a "regime change" and a new leader that will do the bidding of his American masters, in exchange for a big chunk of the country´s resources. That might appeal to some, but have a closer look at the other countries where this has happened, did the ordinary people benefit from this?

Today, Russia may have a new face, but it will be business as usual!
