Sheffield City Region Mayoral Election Results Forecast (South Yorkshire)

On May 3rd in addition to the local city council elections, the larger Sheffield city region (Sheffield, Doncaster, Barnsley, Chesterfield, Rotherham and apparently including large chunks of Derbyshire) will also hold an election for South Yorkshires first Mayor (sorry people who live in Derbyshire your now part of South Yorkshire). The candidates will likely be unknown to most voters, and all that voters can really go is where they are from, live and work. And what they represent in terms of party politics.

Ian Walker - Cons - Sheffield Since 1993 - Business man

Rob Murphy - Green - Sheffield since 2004 - Anti AMey PFI tree felling rampage.

David Allen - English Democrats - Doncaster - Vote LEAVE EU

Dan Jarvis - Labour - Barnsley since 2011, Will continue to be an MP after elected as Mayor

Hannah Kitching - Lib Dems - Penistone - Business Owner - Anti Brexit - As Mayor wants to setup a Yorkshire office in Brussels.

Naveen Judah - NHS - Rotherham - NHS and Disabled rights campaigner

Mick Bower - Yorkshire Party - Rotherham - Teacher - Wants Yorkshire to have its own parliament.

And on the basis of the above, here's is my short list of who in my opinion would be best for Sheffield / South Yorkshire:

  • Rob Murphy
  • Mick Bower
  • Ian Walker

Whilst who is actually most likely to win

  • Dan Jarvis

Should not come as much of a suprise given the extent to which Yorkshire people tend to blindly like lemmings vote Labour. What a joke! As he will only be a part-time Mayor as it has been stated that he will continue working as an MP. Speaks volumes of how Labour takes Sheffield / South Yorkshire voters for granted. More bad news for South Yorkshire is that the Lib Dems are second place contenders, which isn't any better.

So unless Labour Sheffield city council's tree felling rampage manages to deliver a political earthquake. We appear to be stuck with another career Labour politician as part-time Mayor of South Yorkshire.
