Mattress Guides to Help You Choose Your Next Mattress

It seems like you can’t watch something on TV, or even visit the mall, without someone trying to sell you a mattress. There are so many choices out there; you could hardly be blamed for being overwhelmed; especially if you have a health condition to consider. Here are some tips to help you choose the right mattress for you.

1. Consult Your Doctor
If you do have a sleep disorder, then you should consult your doctor or physical therapist and ask them for their recommendations. Keep in mind your doctor won’t be an expert with mattresses, but they do understand your medical condition and the symptoms of it, giving them the insight to offer some great advice on that front.

2. Avoid Gimmicks
Don’t listen to any mattress salesman that claims that their mattresses are medically approved. There is actually no such thing as a medical organisation that officially certifies a mattress to have such a label. It’s possible that a mattress may have orthopedic-friendly features, but this would not have been verified by a medical group.

3. Give it a Test Drive
There’s no harm in trying a mattress for yourself in the shop. Try to lie down on it for up to 15 minutes. Don’t let yourself feel self-conscious about it. A mattress is a big purchase and so you want to get a good feel for what you’re getting in for. You’re going to be sleeping in it for eight hours a day after all, something that most people forget according to Ted from Mattress Guides.

4. Firm Mattresses Aren’t Always Best for Backs
Take some time to think about buying a firm mattress, as some research has suggested that medium-firm mattresses may be better for lower back pain. There can be a big difference between a firm support and a firm feel. You should try to find something that offers firm support but a comfortable feel. What feels comfortable to you depends on your own personal preferences.

5. Pillow Tops Aren’t For Everyone
Lightweight people don’t benefit as much from having a thick pillow top mattress. This is because they aren’t heavy enough to compress the foam to the point it can touch the support system underneath. On the other hand, larger people will feel more comfortable using such a mattress as it provides some extra cushioning between themselves and the coils of the mattress.

6. Consider an Adjustable Bed
If you’re someone that feels more comfortable sitting rather than lying down, then you should consider using an adjustable bed. These beds allow you to have your head in these elevated slightly to reduce the pressure on the lower back. Pillows can also be used to achieve a similar effect.

7. Ask About Trial Periods and Comfort Guarantees
Plenty of states will allow retailers to offer a so-called comfort guarantee. Ask for this before purchasing a mattress, and understand the details of the guarantee - such as if you have to pay for shipping, if you get your money back or exchange for a new mattress, if the mattress has to be returned within a certain time frame, etc.

Keep in mind that it will be your mattress and your back, and you’ll be spending your money. It’s worth taking the time to do some research and find the best possible mattress for you. Look out for special offers and sales, and don’t be afraid to negotiate prices and delivery charges.
