One of the most beautiful aspects of the financial field is how vast and versatile it is. There are positions that cater to every skill and aptitude out there and that will allow you to follow a career that actually fits your interests. But with this plethora of choices, finding one career path can be a challenge. Here are just a few great positions you could consider as a finance graduate.

Commercial Banking

Commercial banks offer a wide variety of financial services and products such as checking and saving accounts, business accounts, financial planning services, loans and much more. There are a multitude of different positions you could fill, such as bank clerk, loan officer, branch manager or work in operations or marketing for instance.

Investment Banking

Investment banking offers some of the most prestigious, and also very demanding, career options. Investment banking mainly revolves around issuing and making corporate securities available to investors. You’ll also be called to trade securities while offering financial advice to both investors and companies.

Corporate Finance

Corporate finance jobs revolve around generating and managing revenue and financing for corporations. This will usually be done by reducing corporate risk while maximising corporate value.

Some of the functions you’ll have to fulfil include making financial forecasts, negotiating credit lines, working with outside auditors and setting up the company’s financial strategy. So more sophisticated positions might ask that you look at mergers and acquisitions and look at the value of a target for acquisition for instance.

And what’s great is that you can work in a variety of different industries as well. If you have a particular industry you have more knowledge on, like the online gambling industry for instance, then you could work with an online casino. You’ll be able to find great corporate finance jobs at all levels, whether we’re talking about multinational corporations or small start-ups.

Hedge Fund Careers

Hedge funds are mainly unregulated investment funds that are completely private. Hedge fund managers are usually the first position you hear of in relation to hedge funds and they are responsible for selling assets and making acquisitions. But there are many more positions available besides manager. You can also work as a marketing manager, regulatory compliance officer, or financial analyst for instance; the choice is up to you.

Venture Capital and Private Equity

This is a particularly exciting field for anyone who wants to have a direct effect on companies and help them in their progression. Your job will be to help budding companies grow by securing financing in exchange for equity. In some cases, you might even have to step in as an interim executive and turn struggling companies around.

Venture capital companies usually deal with fast growth or budding start-ups, and you’ll have to evaluate diverse pitches to see which companies show the most promise. Venture capital is a high risk, high reward business, so make sure you are cut for the job before you consider that career path.

Finding the perfect finance job for you is all about looking at your strengths and interest and finding a job that reflects them. Make sure that you take a closer look at these options and see if they’re truly a match before you make your decision.
