Online Casinos: Staying Competitive

Personal_Finance / Gambling Aug 29, 2019 - 09:31 AM GMT

Playing in online casinos is a popular past-time these days and the first existence of any sort of online gambling can be traced back to Antigua and Barbuda. In 1992, this Caribbean country legalised online gambling and triggered similar processes in Gibraltar, Malta and some smaller countries. Despite some strong legal challenges, the industry has gone from strength to strength and places a considerable amount of revenue into governmental coffers.

The success of online casinos means that software developers are having to work harder and harder to stay ahead of the competition. The online casino industry is a highly competitive one.

On casinos: their popularity and software

Given the competitive nature of the industry, operators want more and more new online games to steal the march on their competitors. Instead of producing their own software, they call upon specialist companies to provide them with the software so they can offer the right games and services to their clients.

Microgaming is the veteran when it comes to casino software and has more than 850 titles. The company releases at least two titles each month. Their main product is Microgaming Casino and requires a simple install. The operator can then access all the different products and games. The company have also developed a web-based game management module, IQ, which creates easy access to players, incentives, achievements and bet settings.

Another big hitter in the casino software department is Playtech. The company has become one of the biggest providers around and has supplied software to some of the largest online casino operators in the world. Playtech has a comprehensive omni-channel offering and delivers more than 700 premium and in-house titles. These include DC Entertainment tie-ins, such as Superman and The Dark Knight, and film-based themes, including ‘The Matrix’, ‘Gladiator’ and ‘Robocop’.

Net Ent

Of course, these two big guns aren’t going to have it all their own way. Net Ent is a further software provider that cuts itself a sizable slice of the software provision pie. The company partners with operators to deliver a mobile-first live casino and allow them to make Blackjack, Roulette and more to their clients, using the Net Ent Live software. Operators can also count on the provider for a range of games and, with Net Ent’s help, make pooled jackpots a part of their offering as well.

IGT won’t be content to let the above three help themselves to all the customers in the market and are a major software provider for casinos. As well as games, the company produces software that can help casinos run themselves effectively as a business. They also offer advanced software, such as Cardless Connect®, which can turn a customer’s phone into their loyalty card.

If you’re an online casino operator and are looking for a new service provider, or if you’re considering investing in an online casino, you can find some of the top online casino software providers on These include the heavyweights above.

Developing the games

There are a few rules when it comes to developing games. The first is that the house must win. Rule number two is that the player(s) must think they have a (realistic) chance of winning. This illusion of ability is crucial and perhaps the most important aspect. In the long run, the house will take all the money. Developing games is a task that software providers take on with passion: it’s the only way to succeed.

A lot of focus is on developing table games, which have proven more popular in the market with millennials than slots. One of the reasons is that table games allow people to gamble for longer than slots. The other is that casinos have started to tighten up the payouts on slots.

None of this stops online casinos spoiling visitors with variety, however. You’ll find a variety of themed slots in them, anything from wild safari, to rock ‘n’ roll, to history, to TV- and movie-themed slots and more. Each one is designed to have a certain look and feel that adds to the gambling experience for the player. The symbols on the reel will often reflect the theme. For instance, if it’s a movie theme, they may display a character from the movie as a high winning symbol. If it’s a rock band theme, bonuses may have names such as Encore bonus, like the Guns ‘N’ Roses slot does.

What does the future hold for online gaming?

Online casinos have proven so popular, it’s likely that the gambling industry will head further and further down the cyber route. There have also been calls for more transparency and the industry is likely to act upon these. Operators have already agreed to a self-imposed ban on some of the times it advertises.

Anyone following online casino or gaming and looking for investment opportunities may wish to consider the potential of headsets. Technologically, the future of online gaming appears to be virtual reality, in which the player immerses themselves in a sphere closed off from the physical world, or augmented reality, which adds digital elements to a live experience (think Snapchat lenses and the game Pokémon Go!). Both involve headsets, although some apps work with augmented reality and don’t necessarily require one. Today, people are seeking experiences more than they are possessions, this is something developers may have to consider when designing games as well as observe the cardinal rules of the house winning and of the player thinking they can win.

It takes a lot of skill and creativity, plus a solid understanding of the conventions, to develop new games for online casinos, but software providers deliver the goods, month after month, to stay ahead of the game and of their competitors. Not only do they develop the games; they work closely with the casino operators themselves, helping them to implement the games and remain at the forefront of online casino gaming and thrive in the industry. As the industry moves further down the more digital route, we may see even closer collaboration.
