Rolex Watches — a Store of Value
Personal_Finance / Investing Jun 14, 2020 - 05:11 PM GMTAny avid watch enthusiast and collector can appreciate the amount of work that goes into designing a Rolex watch. Thanks to its impeccable design and high-quality, Rolex has become the most recognizable name in the industry, synonymous with classy, well-made watches. Thus, either new or vintage Rolex watches can be used as a unique store of value.
History shows that there were more than a few times when Rolex watches stole the show in world-class auctions and sales, with prices going up into the six-figure range.
World-Renowned Heritage
Interestingly, Rolex was not always known by that name. Originally, watches made by Hans Wilsdorf and Alfred Davis were named simply — Wilsdorf and Davis. The name was changed to Rolex in 1908, only three years after the establishment of the company. The final name Rolex Watch Co. Ltd., the one we know today, came in 1915.
Although Rolex watches were initially made in the UK, the manufacturing process moved to Switzerland after the First World War, where the company is headquartered to this day.
For more than a century, Rolex has been a pioneer in the industry of making watches. Customers could enjoy an array of watches explicitly made for adventurous professions, such as pilots, divers, racers, and the like. The manufacturing of those high-grade watches marked the beginning of a long-lasting tradition — preserving Rolex watches in impeccable condition to keep their value high.
Rolex entered the history books a few times, with accomplishments like producing the world’s first waterproof wristwatch and the first watch showing the date on the dial. Additionally, it was Rolex that first managed to secure chronometer certification for a wristwatch. These are only a few achievements of the many accomplished by Rolex.
Moreover, Rolex watches in good condition have an ingrained value that continually rises with time. Vintage Rolex watches, such as the Oyster Perpetual models, have turned out to be some of the most sought-after models for their durability and attention to detail.
Lasting Value
Superb quality and unparalleled brand recognition allow Rolex watches to maintain fantastic value in the competitive luxury watch market. However, the value of each watch depends on several factors.
Keep in mind that watches in pristine condition present a much better store of value over time than those that were worn daily for many years. Other factors and unique qualities of each watch, such as the reference number, have a significant impact as well.
Time can either be your friend or your enemy when it comes to Rolex watches. The passage of time has a tremendous influence, as a watch can gain vintage status, which can have a significant impact on its price. In the same manner, if the watch is not notable enough its value can decrease, even if it’s in perfect condition.
Ultimately, not all Rolex models will increase in value over time. So, if you’re interested in making a profit, do some research regarding which new or vintage watches are worth the investment before you make your decision.
