Challenges of Working from Home

Remote work has become a necessity for many, and it's likely that working from home will become an established norm in every sector. While there are many perks to being able to virtually tend to you work duties, there are also some setbacks that require some adjustment. If you're new to working from home, you might miss the companionship of your colleagues. You could also miss the sense of structure your morning commute provided; even though you can mimic a routine at home, it can easily become claustrophobic always being in your hours. Below are three other differences you'll face transitioning from the office to remote work along with some potential solutions.

Less Exercise

Without an office gym for the ability to work out on your lunch break, it can be harder to get your daily cardio in. Fitness is more than just about protecting your physical wellness; it also improves your mental health by providing a good outlet for stress. While you may not want to pick up a membership, you don't have to forgo fitness altogether, either. Consider purchasing your own outdoor gym equipment to get in shape in your own backyard. This equipment is customizable and flexible to suit every fitness level and exercise preference; you'll be able to have a designated spot to let off some steam and stay in shape.

No Cafeteria

Working from home requires additional preparation. You may need to pack your lunches every evening along with the kids' lunches. Meal prep requires greater attention, and for those who were used to grabbing meals at the office cafeteria, this can feel like a costly and time-consuming downside. Although you might not have the same choices you did at work, you can actually save money and eat healthier by planning your meals. Opt for lunches that are easy to prepare such as rice bowls with chicken or tofu, salads and sandwiches with a packet of crisps. You can even prepare some meals on the weekend, so you can simply grab and go during the workweek. Focus on buying everything you'll need for the coming week to spare additional trips to the supermarket or expensive takeout lunches.

You Have to Buy All Your Own Supplies

Unless you already had a home office, buying all the necessary equipment can be a hefty expense. Without a printer, scanner or copier, you'll have to rely on outside services or buy your own. Purchasing combo sets can help ease the cost, and you can also consider paying in bulk. This will give you more supplies for less over time and save you multiple trips to the store. Opt to go paperless whenever you can, and consider generic vs. brand names for common supplies like printer paper and pens. And although it costs a bit extra, make sure you get a warranty on any new office equipment. Technical malfunctions can happen to anyone, and it's far better to spend slightly more at checkout than be forced to spend hundreds of pounds later.
