Stock Market SPY Likely to Break Below July Low / Stock-Markets / Stocks Bear Market

By: Mike_Paulenoff

From a swing move perspective, the fact that the S&P 500 Depository Receipts (AMEX: SPY) have violated 125.55/50 indicates that the current decline off of Tuesday's rally peak at 130.71 should accelerate lower to test and likely violate the 7/28 low at 123.42 on the way to 122.40/30 next. Any recovery rally effort is unlikely to be able to penetrate resistance above 126.30/50 prior to hitting 122.40/30 first.

Stock Market Bears Ready to Strike During September / Stock-Markets / Stocks Bear Market

By: Michael_Swanson

Best Financial Markets Analysis ArticleWe just had the summer rally. You may have missed it, but the S&P 500 managed to finish the month of August up a whopping 1.1% while the Nasdaq ended with a gain of 1.8%. You might detect some sarcasm here and there is a bit. You see despite the lack of conviction in the market action many people are calling for a new bull market in the financial media and on TV.

This week's Barrons has a story titled The Reluctant Bulls. It quotes Francois Trahan as saying that the "the US is the best stock market to be in." He claims that oil is going into a bear market, wage growth is shrinking and therefore inflation should fade. Combine that with interest rate cuts made by the Fed earlier this year that should begin to kick in to the economy and you have a recipe for "reviving domestic economic prospects," he says.

Bear Stock Market Investment Secrets or Long-term Profits / Stock-Markets / Stocks Bear Market

By: Money_Morning

Best Financial Markets Analysis ArticleKeith Fitz-Gerald writes: During a two-year stretch every 20 years or so, the Standard & Poor's 500 Index can be expected to lose 35% or more of its value.

In 1974, according to research by Ibbotson Associates, that truism manifested itself as a 37.25% downdraft. It was even worse in 2002, when investors received a 41.65% haircut.

SPX Stocks Bear Market Technicals / Stock-Markets / Stocks Bear Market

By: Zeal_LLC

Best Financial Markets Analysis ArticleBack in mid-July, as Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac teetered on the edge of collapse, the flagship S&P 500 (SPX) stock index plunged to 1215 on a closing basis. Fears ran high as the markets waited for the next shoe to drop in the ailing financial companies. The near-term outlook for US stocks seemed pretty bleak.

But how fast popular sentiment changes! In less than a month after these depths were witnessed, the SPX had rallied 7.4%. By mid-August the troubles of the previous month had been all but forgotten. Calls for a new bull market abounded, with the great majority of analysts expecting clean sailing ahead. And those that do remember mid-July now largely seem to think it was GSE-specific and not a broader issue.

Why Today’s Stocks Bull Market is Tomorrow’s Bear Trap / Stock-Markets / Stocks Bear Market

By: Money_Morning

Keith Fitz-Gerald writes: Depending on your perspective, U.S. equities are either at the edge of another cliff or at the dawning of a new bull market.

We could make the case for either. But in as much as that would be an interesting exercise, the more relevant question is what the data suggests.

Responding to Stocks Bear Market Conditions / Stock-Markets / Stocks Bear Market

By: David_Shvartsman

Best Financial Markets Analysis ArticleWe talked about the continuing global bear market in equities on Monday, but there was an important corollary to this discussion that was not addressed (we will address it here now). The question is this: how do you, as a trader or investor, respond to bear market conditions?

By: Hans_Wagner

Best Financial Markets Analysis ArticleIf you want to learn to invest, one of the best ways is to follow the trend. Following the trend is a proven way to beat the market and grow your stock portfolio. Basic technical analysis provides the tools to identify and follow the trends of the market as determined by the S&P 500.

It is best to begin with the big picture in mind and then work our way down to weekly and then daily views of the charts. You will notice that the chart and the value of the indicators change as we move from a monthly to a weekly and then a daily chart.

Making sense of the Stocks Bear Market- Round Table / Stock-Markets / Stocks Bear Market

By: William_R_Thomson

Best Financial Markets Analysis ArticleAnthony: I'm delighted to welcome such a strong panel - a mark of how seriously you gentlemen view the current global financial and economic situation. It's especially pleasing to welcome back some old friends - Marc Faber, Mark Mobius, Ethan Harris and William Thomson.

Overview - Since the sub-prime mortgage crisis burst upon the US a year ago, there have been market rallies and claims that the worst is over, only to be followed by fresh plunges in values and sentiment. Are we near the bottom now, or just at the start of a long, slow meltdown? Our experts take the latter view.

Broadening Top Megaphone Pattern Predicted Stock Market Crash / Stock-Markets / Stocks Bear Market

By: Robert_McHugh_PhD

Diamond Rated - Best Financial Markets Analysis ArticleThe Jaws of Death” - The following chart was shown regularly throughout 2007, as we made the point that stocks, specifically the Dow Industrials, had traced out a huge, ominous, major Broadening Top pattern which suggested a long and sharp plunge would follow.

Here is what we said in the August 2007 expanded weekend issue: “We researched and discovered that almost all the major stock market tops of the past century were marked by a Broadening Top pattern . This pattern, also know as a Megaphone , which also looks like a set of jaws, is uniquely characterized by two mirroring boundary lines. The top boundary line is ascending; the bottom boundary line is descending.

Stocks Bear Market Phases / Stock-Markets / Stocks Bear Market

By: Mike_Shedlock

Best Financial Markets Analysis ArticleIn a bull market, everyone ignores the greed and fraud that running rampant. No one wants to take away the spiked punch, even after it is perfectly clear that everyone is drunk. The party continues long after any reasonable person might have expected the party to end. Eventually the party goers all pass out on the floor and the pool of greater fools exhausts itself.

In a bear market, there are more distinct, readily observable phases.

Trading the Stocks Cyclical Bear Market / Stock-Markets / Stocks Bear Market

By: Zeal_LLC

Best Financial Markets Analysis ArticleEarlier this week, the flagship S&P 500 stock index (SPX) officially entered bear-market territory. As it edged past a 20% loss since its all-time high of October 2007, all debate about whether or not a bear really exists was instantly rendered irrelevant. Beyond any doubt we now sojourn in a full-on bear market!

The fearsome reputations of stock bears are well-deserved. During the legendary bear running between January 1973 and October 1974, the SPX lost a sickening 48.2% of its value. In a much more recent specimen, between March 2000 and October 2002 the SPX shed 49.1%. Cyclical bear markets often tend to cut stock prices in half by the time they fully run their courses!

Stocks Bear Market Generates Inane Mainstream Commentary / Stock-Markets / Stocks Bear Market

By: Anthony_Cherniawski

Best Financial Markets Analysis ArticleI am amazed at the absolutely inane commentary from the media about how great it is that we're having a bear market, as if they saw it coming ahead of time.  Now they're talking gibberish about all the buying opportunities out there and how after we've reached the 20% decline level it's  time to back up the truck and load up on stocks.

The 20% Rule and Stocks Bear Markets / Stock-Markets / Stocks Bear Market

By: Michael_Swanson

Best Financial Markets Analysis ArticleFrom its July intraday low to its October 9, 2007 intraday high the DOW has fallen 20.5%. A lot of commentators on television and the Internet are making note of the fact that the DOW is down 20% and saying that this is "bear market territory." Some are saying that this means it is the time to buy, while others are saying this is proof that we are now in a bear market.

Stocks Bear Market Insanity / Stock-Markets / Stocks Bear Market

By: Paul_Lamont

As we forecast last month in our Investment Analysis Report, the regional banks have quickly brought about the next round of financial troubles. We expect a large decline in the broader stock market to be the next major issue. The Royal Bank of Scotland , Morgan Stanley , Barclays , and even the Bank of International Settlements (the central bank's central bank) have issued financial storm warnings. We referenced the Bank of International Settlements (BIS) last July in warning of the credit crunch last year . According to the Telegraph , they are now specifically warning of deflation. The BIS states:

Sell, Hedge your Stock Market Investments.. or Be Prepared to Lose! / Stock-Markets / Stocks Bear Market

By: Money_and_Markets

Diamond Rated - Best Financial Markets Analysis ArticleMartin Weiss writes: The stock market is falling swiftly, and you don't have the luxury of time. So I'll get straight to the point:

If you haven't done so already in response to our many earlier warnings, you'd better sell or hedge your vulnerable investments now . If you don't, be prepared to suffer far deeper losses in the bear market of 2008 and beyond.

But beware: Most brokers will try to talk you out of it. They have a hidden agenda. They want to keep you as a customer; and they know that, once customers sell their stocks, they often close their brokerage accounts.

Stocks Bear Market- Talking Heads Speak About Buying Opportunties? / Stock-Markets / Stocks Bear Market

By: Dudley_Baker

What the heck does this mean? With the financial markets in the United States finally kicking into a full blown bear market, we know where the down is in ‘The Upside of Down'. Don't you love it when the talking heads on the financial TV channels still speak about the buying opportunities? They suggest buying the defensive stocks as they will decline less than the other sectors. What? Why would an ‘investor' want to buy something knowing it will go down, just not as much as the others? I have never understood that silly argument. The financial sector is tanking, the banks are tanking and one of ‘big three' auto companies is now selling at levels not seen since 1955.
