Turkey Debt Crisis is Not Contained / Interest-Rates / Turkey

By: Michael_Pento

During my last appearance on CNBC, before I was banned several years ago, I warned that the removal of massive and unprecedented monetary stimuli from global central banks would have to be done in a coordinated fashion. Otherwise, there would be the very real risk of currency and debt crises around the world.

However, coordination among central banks is not what is happening. The Fed is miles ahead in its reversal of monetary stimulus, as it has already raised rates seven times; with two more 25bps rate hikes in the pipeline scheduled for later this year. It has also avowed to sell off two trillion dollars’ worth of debt off its balance sheet--while the rest of the world’s central banks are far behind in this monetary tightening course. This has led to a significant increase in the value of the US dollar.

What Is The Future Of Turkish Lira? / Currencies / Turkey

By: ElliottWave-Forecast

Turkish Lira dropped nearly 30% since Friday, 10th August 2018 and one stage and has since recovered nearly half of the losses and now trading at 6.4093 which is still nearly 15% below where it was last Friday. We know that US President Donald Trump doubled Tariffs on Steel and Aluminium Imports from Turkey on Friday which is said to be the reason for the sharp decline in Turkish Lira (rally in USDTRY). In this blog, we take a look at the Elliott Wave structure of USDTRY and explain why the spike higher stopped where it stopped.

It's Time for A New Economic Strategy in Turkey / Economics / Turkey

By: Steve_H_Hanke

Since President Tayyip Erdogan has been at the helm, the Turkish lira has tumbled.  Today, it collapsed. At one point, it was down as much as 18.5% against the U.S. dollar.  The chart below traces the ugly course the lira has taken against the greenback under Erdogan’s tutelage.

Talk Cold Turkey Economic Crisis / Economics / Turkey

By: Raul_I_Meijer

Recep Tayyip Erdogan became Prime Minister of Turkey in 2003. His AKP party had won a major election victory in 2002, but Erdogan was banned from political office until his predecessor Gül annulled the ban. Which he had gotten in 1997 for reciting an old poem to which he had added the lines “The mosques are our barracks, the domes our helmets, the minarets our bayonets and the faithful our soldiers….”

The Turkish courts of the time saw this as “an incitement to violence and religious or racial hatred..” and sentenced him to ten months in prison (of which he served four in 1999). The courts saw Erdogan as a threat to the secular Turkish state as defined by Kemal Ataturk, the founder of modern Turkey in the 1920’s. Erdogan is trying to both turn the nation towards Islam and at the same time not appearing to insult Ataturk.

Turkey Faces An Economic Dilemma That Will Have Global Implications / Politics / Turkey

By: John_Mauldin

BY GEORGE FRIEDMAN AND XANDER SNYDER : A country’s decision to borrow money is not always strictly economic. Take Turkey, whose ratio of gross external debt (all public and private sector debt) to GDP has jumped from 39% in 2012 to 52% today.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has been pushing to increase available credit to spur economic activity. This is a political goal, though one motivated by economic objectives.

This Chart Reveals Turkey’s Real Economic Position In The Balkans / Politics / Turkey

By: John_Mauldin

By Geopolitical Futures : Building economic ties should be the major avenue for Turkey to develop inroads into the Balkans. Turkey is a European power as well as a Middle Eastern power, and it has been a key player in the Balkans for centuries.

But Turkey’s influence in the Balkans and the rest of southern Europe is currently limited at best.

Turkey's President Wins Sweeping Powers in Cliffhanger Vote / Politics / Turkey

By: STRATFOR

In an apparent cliffhanger victory, with challenges from the opposition still outstanding, the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) and President (and now party leader) Recep Tayyip Erdogan are claiming a hairline victory in a decisive referendum that will greatly empower the presidency. Some 48 million of 55 million eligible voters cast ballots on a raft of 18 constitutional amendments that will fundamentally alter the Turkish government, taking effect in the next scheduled election in 2019. With nearly all votes counted, the "Yes" vote garnered 51.34 percent of the vote with the "No" vote coming in close behind with 48.66 percent of the vote, according to state-run Anadolu Agency.

Here’s the Real Reason Behind Closer Russia-Turkey Ties / Politics / Turkey

By: John_Mauldin

BY GEORGE FRIEDMAN : Russian President Vladimir Putin and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan met on Tuesday. It is not clear what came of it, but it is clear what is at stake.

Russia is weakening. The state of the economy is now the main issue (read my extensive overview of Russia’s geopolitical situation) Ukraine remains at the center of its strategic concerns. Turkey is an emerging power. It is managing its internal crisis effectively, if brutally.

The Failed Coup Will Help Turkey Become a Major Power / Politics / Turkey

By: John_Mauldin

GEORGE FRIEDMAN writes: In my book The Next 100 Years, I argued that Turkey is going to become a major regional power. Recent events would seem at odds with this view. But in fact, they confirm it.

Emerging as a regional power puts great pressure on a nation. The shift in external reality causes internal shifts as well. This is what we see in Turkey: a clash between rival factions with diverse visions, a coup of some sort, and for now, a dictatorship.

Erdogan Might Have Known about the Coup but Didn’t Prevent It on Purpose / Politics / Turkey

By: John_Mauldin

A coup has to be carefully planned for many weeks. It requires endless meetings and preparation. Many thousands of troops, tanks, helicopters, and all the rest, must suddenly appear in the streets and take over.

And all of this planning has to take place in complete secrecy. Without the element of surprise, there is no coup.

Attempted Military Coup in Turkey / Politics / Turkey

By: Stephen_Lendman

Turkey is no stranger to military coups, three occurring in the post-Ottoman era, the last one in September 1980 before the July 15 attempted takeover.

It continued overnight. Events are fast moving. Reports indicate scores killed, many others injured, numerous arrests made by regime authorities. They remain in power - martial law and a curfew imposed.

Turkey's Erdogan Hardening Dictatorial Rule / Politics / Turkey

By: Stephen_Lendman

Erdogan is one of the world’s most ruthless despots, Turkey a NATO member, a valued US ally.

Washington largely ignores his tyrannical rule, his abolition of press freedom, imprisoning critics, his war on Turkish, Syrian and Iraqi Kurds.

Turkish lawmakers have immunity from prosecution. Erdogan wants pro-Kurdish Peoples Democratic Party (HDP) members (the country’s third largest parliamentary bloc) stripped of their fundamental right for opposing ruthless regime policies.

Tyrants operate their own way, eliminating whatever interferes with their iron-fisted rule - Erdogan one of the region’s worst, a tinpot despot in a part of the world ruled by dictators.

Anyone supporting freedom fighting Kurds he calls “terrorists” are considered enemies of the state, subject to prosecution, imprisonment or assassination.

Regime Change in Turkey? More Likely Than You Think / Politics / Turkey

By: Mike_Whitney

On Friday, the United States rejected a draft resolution by Russia that was intended to prevent a Turkish invasion of Syria. Moscow had called for an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to address its growing concern that Turkey is planning to send thousands of ground troops and armored vehicles it has massed on its southern border, into Syria to protect Turkish-backed militants and to block the Kurdish militia, the YPG, from establishing a contiguous state in northern Syria. Moscow’s one-page resolution was a thoroughly-straightforward document aimed at preventing a massive escalation in a conflict that has already claimed the lives of 250, 000 and left the country in ruins.

Latest Turkey Ankara Blast: Terrorism or False Flag? / Politics / Turkey

By: Stephen_Lendman

Put nothing past fascists running Turkey, led by Recep Tayyip Erdogan, a megalomaniacal international outlaw, a lunatic capable of anything to further his Ottoman empire delusions.

False flags are perhaps the oldest dirty trick in the book, a longtime US tradition, dating from at least the mid-19th century, 9/11 the mother of them all.

Turkey Downs Russian Jet to Draw NATO and US Deeper into Syrian Quagmire / Politics / Turkey

By: Mike_Whitney

On Tuesday, Turkey shot down a Russian warplane that was carrying out military operations against jihadi groups in Northern Syria. The downing of the Su-24 fighter jet is part of a broader plan by the administration of Turkish President Tayyip Recep Erdogan to topple the secular government of Syrian President Bashar al Assad and to establish “safe zones” on the Syrian side of the Turkish-Syrian border. Erdogan needs the safe zones to provide a sanctuary for the militant extremists who are the footsoldiers in his war against Syria. The downing of the Russian fighter is a desperate attempt by Erdogan to incite a reaction from Russia that will draw either NATO or the United States deeper into a conflict which has dragged on for 4 and a half years and killed 250,000 people.

By: Stephen_Lendman

He’s a despotic loose cannon, a close US imperial ally, one of 28 NATO members - part of its killing machine war on humanity.

Downing Russia’s aircraft was an act of war - Washington the likely orchestrator, both nations acting conspiratorially - part of longstanding US-led Putin-bashing, the one world leader above all others challenging America’s imperial agenda forthrightly, deserving universal praise and support.

Turkey Goes to War / Politics / Turkey

By: Mike_Whitney

“ISIS threatens our way of life and security…We have plans to act militarily against them in the coming days. You will see.” — Turkish Foreign Minister Feridun Sinirlioğlu

A landslide victory in Turkey’s November 1 snap elections has removed the last obstacle in President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s drive to war. The surprise outcome of the balloting, which was widely denounced as “unfair and marred by fear and violence by international election observers”, has given Erdogan’s Justice and Development Party (AKP) 49 percent of the vote restoring single-party rule in Ankara. Shortly after the election results were announced, Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu called on Turkey’s political parties to scrap the existing constitution in order to grant President Erdogan nearly-limitless executive authority.
