Banks Catch a Break with Long Timeline for Implementing Basel III Regulations / Companies / Market Regulation

By: Money_Morning

Best Financial Markets Analysis ArticleKerri Shannon writes: Global regulators on Sunday agreed on new banking capital requirements - known as Basel III - that were much less severe than expected, boosting global financial stocks as investors were optimistic about banks' ability to comply.

The Basel Committee on Banking Supervision agreed on new rules that will more than triple capital requirements to give banks a bigger cushion against losses. Banks will have to raise the amount of common equity they hold to 7% of assets, up from 2%.

Major Infrastructure Stock Too Cheap to Ignore / Companies / Company Chart Analysis

By: Jared_Levy

Best Financial Markets Analysis ArticleLast week the president announced his $50 billion plan to repair, rebuild and improve our nation's crumbling infrastructure systems, while adding jobs in the process. Of course, any new spending plan bill will most likely be met with some opposition and scrutiny. Let me first say that I am not a supporter of deficit spending, nor do I agree entirely with our current fiscal and monetary policies, but that's another article all together. What I can tell you is that a large portion of this country's infrastructure is in extremely poor condition and MUST be repaired by any means necessary.

Junior Mining, Management, Company Stage and Risk v. Reward / Companies / Gold & Silver Stocks

By: Richard_Mills

Best Financial Markets Analysis ArticleWhen looking for an investment the approach I take involves looking at the global - big picture - conditions. I study trends, read the news, basically watch and listen to what's going on in the world. Then I study the different sectors in order to select the one that I think is going to match up well with, what I think is, the soon to be overriding theme. This is top down investing.

Corrective Period Ahead of Next Upleg for Walter Energy / Companies / Company Chart Analysis

By: Mike_Paulenoff

Crazy volatility aside, the overall pattern in Walter Energy (NYSE: WLT) argues that all of the action off of the Sept 3 high at 78.74 represents a maturing corrective period which when complete should resolve itself into a new upleg that propels the stock above 79.00-80.00 towards 90.00. Next upleg should coincide with an upside breakout in the China equity indices, which would benefit this industry.

Investing in Green Energy ETFs / Companies / Renewable Energy

By: Ron_Rowland

Best Financial Markets Analysis ArticleRemember a few years ago when “alternative energy” was all the rage? With crude oil trading at $150 and gasoline prices above $4 a gallon in many places, breaking free from our dependence on fossil fuels seemed like a good business opportunity.

As someone who greatly enjoys driving, air conditioning and electricity, I totally agree that it would be nice to diversify our energy sources. The question is: How to do it cost-effectively?

Consumer Debt Financed Demand Deleveraging Reality Check for Retailers / Companies / Sector Analysis

By: James_Quinn

Diamond Rated - Best Financial Markets Analysis ArticleHaving worked for a big box retailer for 14 years, I understand the dynamics of a high growth rollout of stores as a key to increasing market share and profits. Some of the best retail names in the US have practiced the identical strategy of concentrating many stores in each market to drive the small competitors out of business. This strategy worked wonders for Lowes, Wal-Mart, Target and Kohl's during the early part of this decade. The combination of solid same store sales and opening new stores is a fantastic combination during good times. The results actually make the CEOs of these companies think they are brilliant. Their store expansion models based on rosy assumptions are followed like they can't go wrong.

By: Dian_L_Chu

In response to HP's suit against its former CEO Mark Hurd to block him from working at Oracle, Larry Ellison stated that

"Oracle has long viewed HP as an important partner...By filing this vindictive lawsuit against Oracle and Mark Hurd, the HP board is acting with utter disregard for that partnership, our joint customers, and their own shareholders and employees....The HP Board is making it virtually impossible for Oracle and HP to continue to cooperate and work together in the IT marketplace."

Pump Up Your Investment Portfolio with Utilities Stocks / Companies / US Utilities

By: Money_Morning

Best Financial Markets Analysis ArticleLarry D. Spears writes: There was a time when the words "widows and orphans" pretty much defined utilities stocks. As well-regulated monopolies whose products were in constant and increasing demand, they provided a steady stream of income with a level of safety adequate for even the most conservative portfolios.

Because of more competition, looser rate regulation, and slower growth, utility stocks aren't quite the safe haven they once were. But with interest rates at all-time lows and continuing economic turmoil, they still have something to offer most investors.

The Surprise Threat to BP's Future / Companies / Oil Companies

By: Money_Morning

Best Financial Markets Analysis ArticleKent Moors, Ph.D writes: In the aftermath of the biggest environmental disaster in U.S. history, the Gulf of Mexico relief-well saga continues to monopolize our attention.

But here's the reality: Money problems - not the relief wells - could prove to be the undoing of BP PLC (NYSE ADR: BP). And that means the company's fate is most closely tied to its ongoing efforts to raise money by selling key assets from around the world.
