Mixed Day for Stock Market Indices
Stock-Markets / Stock Markets 2016 Nov 17, 2016 - 12:24 PM GMTThe stock market indices had a mixed session today, but the Nasdaq 100 came back strong with the blue chips backing off to close mixed on the day.
The day started out with a pop to the upside in a 5-wave mini advance on Nasdaq 100. The S&P 500 bounced and came down in a falling wedge, so there were two different patterns. Both the Nasdaq 100 and the S&P 500 settled into a consolidation, and at the end of the day tried to rally, but couldn’t get through resistance, and backed off into the close.
Net on the day, the Dow was down 54.23 at 18,868.83, after reaching new all-time highs at 19,000,00 earlier. The S&P 500 was down 3.44 at 2176.95, 4 points off the low and 3 points off the high. The Nasdaq 100 was up 27.79 at 4792.27.
Advance-declines were slightly positive on the New York Stock Exchange, and the same on Nasdaq. Up/down volume was 11 to 7 negative on New York, total volume of 3.3 billion shares traded. The Nasdaq traded 2 billion shares and had a 4 to 3 positive volume ratio.
TheTechTrader.com board had a mixed day. Priceline.com (PCLN) was up 5.78 to 1503.23, Alphabet Inc. (GOOG) up 5.99 to764.48, Apple Inc. (AAPL) up 2.93 to 110.04, Amazon.com, Inc. (AMZN) 3.25 to 746.49, and Netflix, Inc. (NFLX) 1.58 to 115.17.
Baidu, Inc. (BIDU) gained 2.30 to 166.74, Facebook, Inc. (FB) gave back 86 cents to 116.34, and First Solar, Inc. (FSLR) dropped 37 cents to 32.82. Microsoft Corporation (MSFT) popped 76 cents to 59.63, but Intel Corporation (INTC) was down 7 cents to 34.84.
Tesla Motors, Inc. (TSLA) advanced just 16 cents to 183.93.
Other stocks to the upside included NVIDIA Corporation (NVDA), up 5.44 to 91.63, reaching a new all-time high today at 92.56. Twilio, Inc. (TWLO) was up 2.32 to 37.05, and Acacia Communications, Inc. (ACIA) up 1.55 to 76.41.
On the downside, Puma Biotechnology, Inc. (PBYI), in a difficult biotech sector, was down 1.25 to 41.80, and Exact Sciences Corporation (EXAS) down 2.78 to 14.63.
The Direxion Daily S&P Biotech Bull 3X ETF (LABU) got hammered, down 4.63 to 43.71.
Checking TheTechTrader.com percent-gain leaderboard, the shippers all had a monster morning, but then gave back a chunk of the gains. Sino-Global Shipping America, Ltd. (SINO) ran 4.31, or 178%, to 6.73, on 41 million shares traded, and traded as high as 7.86 earlier in the day. Seanergy Maritime Holdings Corp. (SHIP) bounced 2.40, or 50%, to 7.20, on 12.3 million shares traded, reaching as high as 8.65.
Globus Maritime Limited (GLBS) jumped 9.29, or 188%, to 14.23, on 4.9 million shares traded, and got as high as 23.60 and as low as 6.10. Diana Containerships Inc. (DCIX) climbed 6.72, or 110%, to 12.86, on 19 million shares traded, with a low of 8.27 and a high to 26.17.
In addition, Voltari Corporation (VLTC) popped 1.40, or 65%, to 3.55, on 1.2 million shares traded.
Cara Therapeutics Inc. (CARA) gained 2.04, or 20%, to 12.20, on 5.5 million shares traded. Health Insurance Innovations, Inc. (HIIQ) bounced 1.65, or 19%, to 10.45, on nearly a million shares traded.
Stepping back and reviewing the hourly chart patterns, the indices were up in the morning, down midday, they rallied back at the end of the day to close mixed on the day.
