Kospi Stock Index Long Term Cycles Remain Bullish / Stock-Markets / South Korea
The KOSPI Index in the long term has been trending higher with other world indices since inception in 1983. The index began with a base value set at 100 and trended higher until it ended that cycle in 1994. The index then corrected that cycle with the dip into 1998 lows during the Asian Financial Crisis. That is where the monthly chart pictured below begins. From the 1998 lows the index did three bullish swings higher into the November 2007 highs. The pullback from there until October 2008 was strong enough to suggest it was correcting the whole cycle up from the June 1998 lows.

EWY South Korea ETF, Proxy for Global Tech, Probing Key Support / Stock-Markets / South Korea
Many Street analysts consider the iShares South Korea ETF (EWY) as a proxy for the health of global technology, the semiconductor sector, the chip sector, and perhaps the retail electronics sector as well.
One look at my weekly chart of EWY shows that it has been in the grasp of a major correction or possibly even bear phase since its January all-time high at 79.07 into Tuesday's low at 56.34, a near 30% decline. This decline has retraced two-thirds of of the entire prior advance from the August 2015 low at 42.94 to the January 2018 high at 79.07. One could think that the ugly EWY performance reflected deteriorating relations with North Korea, but, ironically, relations have not been so promising since 1950!

South Korea Dispute Throws Wrench In US War Plans / Politics / South Korea
BY GEORGE FRIEDMAN : Last May at Mauldin Economics’ Strategic Investment Conference, I predicted that the crisis in North Korea would likely lead to war. The crisis ensued, but war has not broken out.
With a top US official saying the Pentagon might have to handle this crisis, it’s time to review what has happened and whether war is really an option now.

South Korea’s Keynesian Experiment Goes Global / Economics / South Korea
Ryan W. McMaken writes: Those of us who have reached a certain age remember the late 80s and early 90s when we were told that the Japanese were taking over the world. We bought their cars. We played their video games. We used their technology for pretty much everything. The Japanese were destined for world domination, we were told. They were better team players. They put more emphasis on the group than on the individual. They worked harder. In 1992, a high-ranking Japanese politician, Yoshio Sakurauchi, declared that Americans are “too lazy” to compete with Japanese workers, and that a third of American workers “cannot even read.” Michael Crichton’s 1992 novel Rising Sun (and the 1993 movie adaptation) fueled these controversies further in the minds of many Americans.

BRICs Are a Bust, South Korea is Only Real Economy Left in the World / Economics / South Korea
Martin Hutchinson writes: With most of the world's major economies running the printing presses to the point where it's becoming absurd, there's one country out there that is in the catbird seat when it comes to a strong, stable economy, growing export markets and strong stable companies.
And it's only going to get better.
Yes, there's a world of opportunity out there, but for all the good there are some serious risks in the usual investing suspects:

South Korea KOSPI Stock Market Forecast / Stock-Markets / South Korea
It looks like that chance of making a new up trend is getting far for Kospi. Last time I was saying that Kospi has a good chance of making medium-term bearish pattern if it breaks levels below around 1940 range and now that fear is more convincing. If this bearish pattern triggers then Kospi may test levels below 1900.

Investing in South Korea is Still a Better Bet Than Buying Japan / Stock-Markets / South Korea
Jon D. Markman writes: As we get further and further from the March 11 earthquake and tsunami that devastated Japan, investors are going to be looking for opportunities to benefit.
But if you're looking for buying opportunities in Asia, investing in South Korea actually is a much better bet than Japan.

North Korean Dear Leader Calls for Holy War / Politics / South Korea
Christmas or no Christmas, the Korean Peninsula is boiling once again, with threats flying thicker than the winter snow along North Korea’s icy Yalu River.
Last week, North Korea threatened a nuclear "holy war" against South Korea. The North Korean "Dear Leader," Kim Jong-il, has repeatedly vowed to "liberate" South Korea, which he calls an American colony.

South Korean Stocks for Solid Economic Growth and Low Inflation / Stock-Markets / South Korea
With key countries in the world economy spiraling toward recession, and even India and China panicking about domestic inflation levels, there's one country in particular that still seems to offer good value in its equities markets, thanks to an economic outlook that combines decent growth and only modest inflation.
That country is South Korea.

Why South Korea is set to Become the Biggest Economic Story of 2008 / Economics / South Korea
Where should you put your money in 2008? And more importantly, how can you make money in 2008? These are not easy questions to answer. With the credit crunch sending shock waves around the globe, and the Fed's dismal attempts to solve the problem, these questions loom large ...
Fortunately, there are some good answers just waiting in the wings. One market in particular not only looks bulletproof, it is posting some of the fastest - and most consistent - productivity gains of all the Asian countries. In fact, this particular economy is one of the most competitive on the planet. And get this: It's dirt cheap, trading at a P/E of only 12.
