The New "Sharing Economy" May Not Be the Profit Bonanza Everyone's Expecting / Companies / Internet

By: ...

MoneyMorning.com Shah Gilani writes: Plenty of analysts, market-watchers, and thought leaders are excited about Uber, Airbnb, and the advent of the so-called "sharing economy."

Why not? Because, as we learned in the sandbox, not everyone wants to share.

Using Social Media to Enhance B2B Networking in Dubai / Companies / Internet

By: Submissions

Veselina Dzhingarova writes: A great number of businesses have expanded their reach into new markets and Dubai is one of the places that has garnered a lot of attention. As one of the ‘Western-friendly’ countries in the Middle East, many of the companies setting up a base there are from the UK, the US and Canada. However, just because the Dubai government welcomes foreign businesses doesn’t mean that a new company is going to be an instant success. One of the best ways to break into a new market is through B2B networking and believe it or not, this is relatively strong in Dubai. For those who are new to the area, the best way to network with other business professionals is going to be through social media. Here are a few facts you may be interested to learn.

The Net Neutrality Scam / Politics / Internet

By: MISES

Ryan W. McMaken writes: Yet again, the government wants to fix a problem that doesn’t exist. According to the Obama administration and the FCC, it is necessary to regulate internet service providers so that they don’t interfere with people’s access to the web. The claim immediately prompts one to ask: Who is being denied access to the web?

Zuckerberg, Facebook Would Love to work With Google on Connectivity Projects / Companies / Internet

By: Bloomberg

Tonight's "Studio 1.0" hosted by Bloomberg Television's Emily Chang (;@EmilyChangTV) features Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg. In a wide-ranging interview, Zuckerberg discussed Internet.org, his relationship with Google, and Facebook's development of drones and lasers.

Zuckerberg says that Facebook will probably "lose a bunch of money" on Internet.org and he doesn't have a "better idea" of when it will become profitable. On whether he'll reach his goal of connecting 1 billion more people by 2020, he said, "We'll see. I think so."

Here’s How We’ll Profit From Elon Musk’s “Space Internet” / Companies / Internet

By: Money_Morning

Michael A. Robinson writes: While you’re checking your stocks on your iPhone and daydreaming about what Frank Underwood will be up to on House of Cards later this month, consider this: More than 3 billion people on Earth still have no or poor access to the Internet.

Whoever figures out a way to get those billions online will likely have created a profit gold mine.

Elon Musk, of Tesla electric vehicles and SpaceX rockets fame, thinks he has the solution: a network of hundreds of low-orbiting satellites that will deliver high-speed, low-cost Internet to the most remote places on Earth.

No other business story took up more column inches and more TV time than the Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. (NYSE: BABA) initial public offering (IPO).

The Alibaba IPO remained the world’s top business story for months on end because of the immense amount of wealth it drew in and then created.

The Dark Clouds Over Cisco - Can Cisco Systems Reinvent Data Analysis? / Companies / Internet

By: Investment_U

Tom Sandford writes: A lot can change in 30 years of business, especially if the company is synonymous with the market segment.

Since its founding in 1984, Cisco Systems Inc. (Nasdaq: CSCO) has grown to be worth $47 billion, with 72,000 global employees. But as IT hardware demand falls victim to the cloud, the company is scrambling to recoup losses from its biggest moneymaker.

When I'm not spending time digging through charts and analysis for Stealth Profits Trader, I like to look at some of the broader market elements that might be useful for any investor.

Today, I've found a great opportunity to buy a well-known and heavily traded stock at a great, low-risk price – perhaps even the best risk-adjusted price that we've seen on this stock to date.

Spain's Publishing Industry Commits Internet Suicide as Google Quits News / Politics / Internet

By: Nadeem_Walayat

Spain at the heart of a luddite Europe Union has forced Google to quit its news service following its law makers succumbing to Spain's lunatic publishing industry that was expecting profit from taxing Google for every news story that it linked to on Google News as of 1st of Jan 2015. That's just for posting the title of news stories with a short snippet to prompt google news searchers to link through to the source content, a lot of free traffic that Spain's publishing industry had greatly profited from.

The Internet Is A Perfect Example of How a Free Market Would and Does Work / Politics / Internet

By: Jeff_Berwick

Some people, apparently, still have a fear of being free (they fear not having violent owners).  It's a fear I've never understood... but whenever you mention to them how much better a free market would be than the statist crapitalism we have today they like to say, "Show me one example of a truly free market that works!"

Amazon's Odds Get Longer as "D-Day" Approaches / Companies / Internet

By: Money_Morning

William Patalon III writes: Part of our investment "thesis" with Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. (NYSE: BABA) is that the e-commerce giant has designs on markets besides China.

And we got a solid sign of that early last week.

Last Monday, at the Wall Street Journal's 2014 Global Technology Conference, Alibaba Chairman Jack Ma said he hoped his payments company, Alipay.com, could link up with Apple Inc. (Nasdaq: AAPL) and its new mobile payment system, Apple Pay.

Amazon Stock Biting Off More Than It Can Chew? / Companies / Internet

By: Investment_U

Zachary Scheidt writes: Amazon.com (Nasdaq: AMZN) is one of the best growth stocks of our generation. Over the last 10 years alone, revenues have grown from $6.3 billion to more than $80 billion per year. Yet despite all the revenue, profits have been absent.

Jeff Bezos, the company’s founder and CEO, built his empire by growing revenues with the promise of profits. His strategy has been to aggressively cut prices (at the expense of profits) to gain market share. Thus far, the strategy has made the company into a retail powerhouse. Bezos hopes to repeat this success with the company’s new business lines.

Newsflash: Everyone Shops Online These Days! / Companies / Internet

By: EconMatters

Antiquated Retail Sales Reports

It is obvious that retail sales numbers are going to be awful for eternity because they are antiquated reports that fail to adequately capture the changing consumer trend of shopping online. Practically nobody is going to waste their leisure time going to a physical store when they can save time, gasoline, and easily search for the best price in a matter of minutes versus spending hours driving all over town in search of the best price or deal with mall parking. The Physical store business is dead, unless one needs to get a haircut, or a good grocery delivery business hasn`t yet arrived in your area.

The Email System the NSA Can’t Access / Companies / Internet

By: Submissions

Ted Baumann writes: It’s been a busy month on the privacy front.

For starters, word got out on August 5 that Russian hackers stole 1.2 billion user names and passwords across several kinds of websites. Then Facebook got into hot water — again — when it decided to force its risky Messenger app on unwilling users. Meanwhile, a U.S. senator warned that users of wearable fitness-tracking devices are unprotected by any privacy law, putting them at serious risk. And the European Union is poised to counter a U.S. court order demanding Microsoft hand over data stored inside its Irish servers.
