Human Evolution - 2 Million Years of Increasing Brain Size - Video / Politics / Evolution

By: Nadeem_Walayat

The primary evolution for the Genus HOMO of the past 2 million years has been largely in the brain, that in the fossil record has seen our cranial capacity expand from what was little different in size to that of a Chimpanzee some 2.5 million years ago to now triple the size, as natural selection selected those humans who were able to utilise a constant flow of new ideas whilst those individuals and populations who just could not make the leap in understanding were literally killed off by superior strategies, as one can imagine the leaps in cognition were a mixture of steady progress coupled with great leaps in insight such as using fire for first warmth then for protection and eventually realising that cooked meat / food is far more easily edible and digestible, that greatly boosted our calorific intake giving fuel for the brain to grow.

Homo Sapiens Rationalensis Diverging From Revelation to the Apocalypse / Politics / Evolution

By: Nadeem_Walayat

This article continues from Part 1 - The First Prophet - Homo Sapiens Shrinking Brains Diverging Species, that covered the period from the emergence of Homo Sapien Religious some 75,000 years ago, their journey out of Africa and the role religious myths have played in bonding tribes of humans together, eventually settling down and farming some 10,000 years ago. However, the consequences of which has unfortunately been for the shrinkage of average human brain size by about 10% as 99% of humans along with many animals and plants were domesticated, slaves where a religious elite made all of the major decisions for them, hence reduction in the requirement for a large energy hungry brain.

The First Prophet - Homo Sapiens Shrinking Brains Diverging Species / Politics / Evolution

By: Nadeem_Walayat

Before I plunge into the main topic of this analysis, here's a quick update of where the stock market trend currently stands. We are now half way through October, which is THE month for stock market doom and gloom! The month when the stock market crash proponents are at their most vocal as its 1929, 1987 and 2008 all over again so a stock market crash is imminent. Though this time its worse than usual because even those who may have been 'mostly' bullish apparently have thrown in the towel several weeks ago to at least conclude that a stocks bear market had begun.

The Killer Ape, Human Evolution, Artificial Intelligence and Extinction End Game / Politics / Evolution

By: Nadeem_Walayat

Some 7 million years ago our human ancestors split from the Apes that would go on to become our closest living relative the Chimpanzee. For the next 5 million years our ancestors would have physically looked little different to modern Chimpanzees  as well as in terms of behaviour and circumstances as there was a very gradual process of evolution of physical abilities such as walking upright in addition to still being good at climbing trees. Even as recently as 2 million years ago, some 3 million years into the age of the Australopithecine's, they would not have looked that different to modern Chimpanzees, living a precariously frightened existence constantly falling victim to predators, and where brains were of comparable size to Chimpanzees, about 1/3rd the cranial capacity of modern man.

Americans Believe In Darwin – Six Times Before Breakfast / Politics / Evolution

By: Andrew_McKillop

NEARLY A HALF
Results from a Harris Poll of 2,250 adults surveyed online between November 13 and 18, 2013 shows that belief in Darwin's theory of evolution, while well below levels recorded for their belief in God, heaven and hell, is up in comparison to 2005 findings (47%, up from 42%).  The respondents were not asked to what extent they believe in QE and Ben Bernanke's economic miracles, but the survey also found that 42% of Americans believe in ghosts, 36% believe in creationism and UFOs, 29% believe in astrology, 26% believe in witches and 24% believe in metempsychosis and reincarnation - that they were once or still are more than one person.

Darwinism Is Nonsensical as well as very Politically Correct / Politics / Evolution

By: LewRockwell

Fred Reed writes: The intent of this essay is not to debate with the ardent of evolutionism, which is the Political Correctness of science. To do so would be pointless. The greatest intellectual divide is not between those who believe one thing and those who believe another, but between those who have an emotional need to believe something fervently and those who can say, “I don´t know.” The former group comprises those tedious Darwinists and Creationists who robotically hurl imprecations at each other like fans of rival football teams. Each blockheadedly refuses to concede the slightest possibility that its doctrine might be other than infallible. To my mind they constitute the best evidence that we did not descend from monkeys, but have not yet ascended to them. Stupidity beyond a certain point is intractable.
