Starbucks £23 Million Tax Dodge Facts, Offers £10 million Donation per year for 2 years / Politics / Taxes
Starbucks is feeling the heat as the general public is seeing through the smoke and mirrors of its publicity machine's assertions that it effectively makes no profits in the UK when the reality is that Starbucks for well over a decade has been transferring its profits abroad to the likes of the Bermuda tax haven and instead reporting losses, giving it an unfair advantage over smaller competing UK coffee houses who do pay an infinitely greater amount of tax on profits.

Warren Buffett: Tax Dodger? / Politics / Taxes
Alexander Green writes: I’m a longtime admirer of Warren Buffett.
He taught me a lot about stock investing, including the most important thing about it I know: Forget about outguessing the market and focus instead on identifying businesses that are selling for less than they are worth.

Is it FAIR to Tax the Rich out of Business? / Politics / Taxes
In a caustic political environment that marks the rich to pay higher taxes because of their inordinate incomes, the outlook for a growing economy diminishes. The argument that well capitalized commercial enterprise owners provide the bulk of the small business jobs is well established. Certainly, not every proprietor is wealthy. On the contrary, many if not most employers struggle to meet their payroll. Even so, the political hysteria to raise the top rates stares directly into the eyes of every wageworker with the prospects of joining the unemployment lines.

The Most Important U.S. Tax Moves Before December 31 / Personal_Finance / Taxes
Alexander Green writes: In his acceptance speech after his re-election, President Obama said he will make reducing the deficit a priority in his second term. During the long campaign, neither he nor Mitt Romney gave many details about how much they would cut from which programs. But Obama did make some very specific tax proposals.

What to Expect If We Go Over the Fiscal Cliff? / Politics / Taxes
Keith Fitz-Gerald writes: I'm on the road this week in Las Vegas and Los Angeles and receiving lots of great questions as usual from your fellow Money Morning subscribers.
Here's a few that really caught my attention. Not surprisingly, one of the biggies deals with the fiscal cliff.

Taxmageddon Holding Hands While Jumping Off the Fiscal Cliff / Politics / Taxes
The rapid approach of the Thelma & Louise bipartisan plunge into the financial abyss is upon us. It is simply unbelievable, that the prospects of rational tax salvation by the end of the year, measured by every statement coming out of the Washington political cabal, will materialize. Extending the current tax rates from automatic rescission on January 1, 2013, as a stopgap method for an enactment of a lasting political rapprochement, is the best that might occur. The net effect will be a perspicacious downturn in economic activity, a new round of layoffs, rising permanent unemployment and a plunge in consumer confidence. Wall Street will make hay by shorting the market while placing blame on the uncompromising hacks that refuse to cut a deal.

How Obama, Boehner Will Deal with the Fiscal Cliff / Politics / Taxes
I begin with North's law for dealing with political Keynesians: "When you've got them by the boondoggles, their hearts and minds will follow."
On January 1, 2013, federal taxes will go up. There is no way around this. One way or the other, federal taxes will go up.
There are some questions associated with this forecast. First, which taxes will be going up? Second, who will wind up paying most of these taxes? Third, what effect will this tax increase have on the American economy?

State Budget Deficits Grow as Millions of People Continue to Evade Taxes / Politics / Taxes
Sasha Cekerevac writes: One of the common themes around the world is the growing level of government debt due to high budget deficits. Budget deficits occur when spending is greater than revenue. Taxes are the main source of revenue for governments; taxes decrease with a slow economy. A slow economy means fewer employees, which means less revenue from income taxes and lower taxes on goods purchased. This increases budget deficits, which then adds to the rising total of the government debt.

Is the "Fiscal Cliff" a Threat to the U.S. Economy? / Economics / Taxes
The US Congressional Budget Office (CBO) said on August 22, 2012, that scheduled tax increases and spending cuts in 2013 would reverse the current modest economic recovery. The CBO and other experts are of the view that large government spending cuts and tax hikes will cause severe economic slump.

Governments Raising Taxes: 73% of Nothing is Nothing / Politics / Taxes
President Francois Hollande recently increased the top income tax rate in France to 75 percent — for incomes in excess of €1 million. This is part of a wider trend with President Obama targeting the wealthy in his election campaign, promising to raise taxes on incomes in excess of $1 million. Shifting the tax burden onto the wealthy might be clever politics, but does it make economic sense? To gauge the effectiveness of this strategy we need to study tax rates and their effect on incomes in the 1920s and 1930s.

Taxmageddon 2013: How to Prepare for Looming Tax Law Changes / Personal_Finance / Taxes
Larry D. Spears writes: It's often said the only things certain in life are death and taxes - but this year, even taxes aren't a certainty.
At least not the specifics, thanks to Election 2012 and Taxmageddon 2013. Investors are left with more questions than answers.

Destroying Internet Freedom by Taxation / Politics / Taxes
Government taxation is as old as the first brute using force to steal from those intimated by threats. So why should it be any different for the internet? In today’s political environment of choosing winners and losers, the rush to tax online sales is gathering steam. Everyone feels the presence of the Amazon behemoth. Retail outlets like Best Buys are rethinking their business model in order to compete. States are eager to tap the flow of transactions with a sales tax that would cost consumers dearly. The issue of "so called" fairness is the argument that bureaucrats love to hang their hat on. So who makes the valid case for exemption or inclusion?

U.S. Taxmageddon Just Got More Frightening / Politics / Taxes
Diane Alter writes: Political battles will take center stage in the second half of 2012, but few loom larger than the scheduled tax increases - "Taxmageddon" - set to take effect in January 2013.
Bush-era tax cuts, payroll tax breaks and other provisions set to expire next year could pack an enormous financial hit, harming the already-fragile U.S. economy and thousands of struggling families. While Democrats and Republicans alike are opposed to letting all the cuts expire, they disagree on exactly what to do about it.

Crimson Tax Tide / Politics / Taxes
If you ever visited my part of the country, you would likely hear about a long-standing controversy over occupational taxes and the right of my state's most populous county to impose them.
That state would be Alabama, and that county would be Jefferson County, established through violent, extramarket means in 1819 yet named for an antitax radical who eventually became the third president of the United States. Although Thomas Jefferson would die five years later, his eponymous county is still with us.

How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Fiscal Cliff / Politics / Taxes
David Zeiler writes: Taking a header off the "fiscal cliff" might be the best thing that could happen to the United States.
It sounds crazy, given all the dire predictions economists are making about the "Taxmageddon" that will arrive on Jan. 1, 2013.
While true, no one is talking about what would happen to the economy after the fiscal cliff crisis of 2013.

Don Miller writes: A slow moving train wreck known as "Taxmageddon" is creeping toward U.S. taxpayers.

A Matter of Time for a U.S. VAT Tax / Politics / Taxes
The insatiable thrust for federal spending continues. The will to correct our fiscal black hole is absent. Even the Tea Party Republicans lack the strength of determination and votes to reverse the ship of state. No matter which party wins the next elections, the deficits facing the budget are huge. Until a total reformation of the way the central government functions, no solution is possible to balance the books. There is no way to escape this stark reality. Expect more gimmicks, additional devaluation of the currency and the inevitable imposition of new forms of taxes.

The always-outspoken Doug Casey addresses a broader view of taxation and its costs to both individuals and society in general in this interview with Louis James.
L: Doug, the Taxman cometh, at least for most US citizens who file their annual tax papers on April 15. We get a lot of letters from readers who know about your international lifestyle and wonder about the tax advantages they assume it confers. Is this something you care to talk about?

The Cyclical Macroeconomic Impact of Taxmageddon 2013 / Economics / Taxes
As you file your 2011 federal income taxes, you are being bombarded in the media with frightening talk about an impending Taxmageddon befalling us as we wake up on January 1, 2013. Of course, if some of the more apocalyptic predictions of the coming end on December 21, 2012, of the “Long Count” Mayan calendar come to pass, then we will not have to concern ourselves with Taxmageddon 2013. But assuming that most of us will be around for January 1, 2013, what is Taxmageddon all about and what will be its cyclical macroeconomic impact on the U.S. economy?
