Is the Cold War Heating Up ? / Politics / New Cold War

By: InvestmentContrarian

Sasha Cekerevac writes: Having been relegated to the history books, the Cold War between the West and the East appears to be heating up again. On one side, we have increasing tensions with China; U.S. politicians claim that China is a currency-manipulator and China has massively increased its spending in defense, which is threatening the security in that part of the world. If we look to the Middle East, tensions are now rising with Russia.

Obama Doctrine: China is the New ‘Enemy Image’ / Politics / New Cold War

By: F_William_Engdahl

Diamond Rated - Best Financial Markets Analysis ArticleSince the collapse of the Soviet Union and the nominal end of the Cold War some twenty years back, rather than reducing the size of its mammoth defense spending, the US Congress and all US Presidents have enormously expanded spending for new weapons systems, increased permanent military bases around the world and expansion of NATO not only to former Warsaw Pact countries on Russia’s immediate periphery; it also has expanded NATO and US military presence deep into Asia on the perimeters of China through its conduct of the Afghan war and related campaigns.

How the "New Cold War" with China Will Change America's Future / Politics / New Cold War

By: Money_Morning

Best Financial Markets Analysis ArticleFew things push the frontiers of the future more than an army's desire to defeat its enemies.

Just look at what happened to America after World War II. Our need to counter Soviet power delivered a tidal wave of innovation.

WikiLeaks Exposes NATO Plans for Full Scale War Against Russia / Politics / New Cold War

By: Global_Research

Best Financial Markets Analysis ArticleBill Van Auken writes: US State Department cables released by WikiLeaks have unveiled secret NATO plans for a US-led war against Russia over the Baltic states.

The cables, first reported by the Guardian newspaper Tuesday and posted on the WikiLeaks site, underscore the growing geo-strategic tensions between the US and Russia even as the Obama administration has emphasized a “reset” in relations that was supposed to overcome the conflicts left over from the Bush administration.

Weak Russian Military Suggestive of Nuclear First Strike Doctrine / Politics / New Cold War

By: Pravda

Best Financial Markets Analysis ArticleIn October 2009, Nicolai Patrushev, Russia’s Security Council Secretary, announced that the new military doctrine was on its way. The old one was dated back in 2000 and written even earlier, under Yeltsin. Patrushev named the announcement of Russia’s right for a preventive nuclear strike the key provision of the new doctrine. He kept his word, and this provision does exist in the text of the doctrine approved by the Security Council. The President of Russia is expected to sign the document by the end of the year. Experts believe that the doctrine is fair and properly reflects the current state of affairs.

Russian Bear Emerging From Post-Soviet Hibernation / Politics / New Cold War

By: John_Mauldin

Best Financial Markets Analysis ArticleIf the Russian Bear has indeed emerged from its post-Soviet hibernation to regain global prominence, that means big things for your portfolio. From the punishingly obvious war with Georgia last summer, to the more subtle - but equally powerful - shut off of natural gas to Ukraine and Europe, Russia is making it abundantly clear that they want to be global players again. To get a read on how this is all going to play out, I turn to my friend George Friedman, the founder of global intelligence firm Stratfor.

Moscow Reacts to US Military Buildup in Afghanistan / Politics / New Cold War

By: F_William_Engdahl

Best Financial Markets Analysis ArticleMoscow has correctly assessed that the announced Obama troop buildup in Afghanistan has no relevance to the stated aim of combatting the ‘Taliban', but rather with a new attempt by the Pentagon strategists to encircle both Russia and China on Eurasia in order to retain US global military dominance. It is not waiting for a new policy from Washington. Rather Russia is acting to secure its perimeter in Central Asia through a series of calculated geopolitical moves reminiscent of the famous Great Game of more than a Century ago. The stakes in this geopolitical power game could not be higher—the issue of world war or peace in the coming decade.

Ukraine, Georgia NATO Entry Put Off Indefinitely / Politics / New Cold War

By: F_William_Engdahl

Best Financial Markets Analysis ArticleNATO ministers in Brussels have decided to ignore US wishes and to delay the admission of Ukraine and of Georgia in effect indefinitely in what the Washington Administration is sheepishly trying to claim is a positive ‘compromise.’ The decision, following EU member state alarm last August over the prospect of European states having to go to war at some point against Russia over an incalculable despot in the Caucasus or in Kiev who decided to provoke Moscow to react, was simply too much.

Geopolitical Imperatives Driving Russia and United States New Cold War / Politics / New Cold War

By: STRATFOR

Best Financial Markets Analysis ArticleOver the past several months we have written quite a bit about the Russian resurgence . This discussion predates Russia's military action in Georgia. Indeed, we have discussed the revival of Russian power since at least 2005, the implications of the FSB's return since April and the potential return of the Cold War since March.

Russia Seeks to Reforge Cold-War Era Influence on its Borders / Politics / New Cold War

By: STRATFOR

Best Financial Markets Analysis ArticleRussia is attempting to reforge its Cold War-era influence in its near abroad. This is not simply an issue of nostalgia, but a perfectly logical and predictable reaction to the Russian environment. Russia lacks easily definable, easily defendable borders. There is no redoubt to which the Russians can withdraw, and the only security they know comes from establishing buffers — buffers which tend to be lost in times of crisis. The alternative is for Russia to simply trust other states to leave it alone. Considering Russia's history of occupations, from the Mongol horde to Napoleonic France to Hitler's Germany, it is not difficult to surmise why the Russians tend to choose a more activist set of policies.

Russian Strategic Bombers in Washington's Backyard / Politics / New Cold War

By: STRATFOR

Summary
Two Russian Tu-160 “Blackjack” strategic bombers reportedly landed in Venezuela on Sept. 10. If this is a Russian military foray into the Caribbean, it will be the first since the Cold War. The move also give Venezuela an opportunity to annoy the United States by letting Washington's old Cold War rival operate from its territory, in the United States' backyard.

Fundamental Geopolitics of Russia, Europe and USA / Politics / New Cold War

By: F_William_Engdahl

Best Financial Markets Analysis ArticleAs details of the larger strategic picture emerge over what is at stake in the Georgia and larger Caucasus crisis it is becoming clearer that Moscow is determined to roll back not to the borders of Stalin and the Cold War of 1948. What Putin and now Medvedev have begun is a process of defusing the highly dangerous NATO expansion, led by the Washington warhawks since the end of the Cold War in 1990. Had events progressed as Washington had planned up until the surprise rejection of NATO membership from no less than ten European NATO member countries, including Germany and France at the April NATO Summit, Georgia would today have been in the admission process to NATO-ization along with Ukraine.

New Cold War and the Threat to Corporate Security / Politics / New Cold War

By: STRATFOR

Best Financial Markets Analysis ArticleA lot has been written about last month's conflict between Russia and Georgia, and the continuing tensions in the region. Certainly, there were many important lessons to be gleaned from the conflict relating to the Russian military , Russian foreign policy and the broader geopolitical balance of power .

One facet of the Russian operations in Georgia that has been somewhat overlooked is the intelligence aspect. Clearly, the speed with which the Russian military responded to the Georgian invasion of South Ossetia indicates that they were not caught off guard. They knew in advance what the Georgians were planning and had time to prepare their troops for a quick response to the Georgian offensive.

America's High Stakes Gamble with Russia / Politics / New Cold War

By: Stephen_Lendman

Best Financial Markets Analysis ArticlePrior to entering WW II, US strategists had a clear aim in mind at its conclusion - to hold unchallengeable power in a new post-war global system: military, economic and political in a "Grand Area" encompassing the West and Far East. Essentially most parts outside the communist bloc and exploiting it under disarming rhetoric like being "selfless advocates of freedom for colonial peoples (and an) enemy of imperialism." Championing "world peace (also) through multinational control."

Kosovo Independence at the Heart of Georgia Russia Crisis / Politics / New Cold War

By: STRATFOR

Best Financial Markets Analysis ArticleThe Russo-Georgian war was rooted in broad geopolitical processes. In large part it was simply the result of the cyclical reassertion of Russian power. The Russian empire — czarist and Soviet — expanded to its borders in the 17th and 19th centuries. It collapsed in 1992. The Western powers wanted to make the disintegration permanent. It was inevitable that Russia would, in due course, want to reassert its claims. That it happened in Georgia was simply the result of circumstance.
