Light at the end of the Recession Tunnel or an Oncoming Train? / Stock-Markets / Financial Markets 2009
The deep recession in manufacturing worsened in March, as demand for U.S.-made durable goods fell 0.8%, the seventh decline in the past eight months, the Commerce Department estimated Friday.
New orders declined in almost every industrial sector, although a key gauge of capital spending by businesses rose 1.5%, the second straight increase following a severe decline in January.

Stock Market Rally Fades In Final Minutes / Stock-Markets / Financial Markets 2009
Yesterday’s tentative rally was brought to an abrupt end by some broad based late selling in financials and notable weakness in tech bellwether Intel on a report that the European Union was close to sanctioning the chip giant for anti-competitive practices. On the bright side, Apple beat street estimates thanks to healthy iPhone sales, as did eBay. Other stocks that reported yesterday, such as Wells Fargo (who had the “best” quarter ever), Scandisk and Boeing all chalked up hefty gains on the day. Caterpillar faired well on an upgrade from JP Morgan, while to the downside, Morgan Stanley had a big miss versus analysts estimates and cut their dividend by 81%.

Geither’s Soothing Words Send Stock Markets Higher / Stock-Markets / Financial Markets 2009
Yesterday saw a nice little wrestling match between Tim Geithner and his former colleagues at the IMF, a match that was easily won by the US Treasury Secretary. The respected IMF Global Financial Stability Report pointed to cumulative worldwide financial losses through to 2010 of slightly over $4tr. Assuming a 17 times leverage ratio, the US financial system was seen as unable to earn its way out of the problem and in need of as much as $500bn of fresh capital.

Are Stock Markets Facing Green Shoots or Just Weeds? / Stock-Markets / Financial Markets 2009
Monday, and the bull lays down on Wall Street as investors fret that Bernanke’s “green shoots” are just weeds. Bank of America’s sharp boost in loan-loss reserves and its downbeat outlook shocked the market after it had been lulled into a false sense of security with the Citi and Wells Fargo “numbers”. Which set do we believe now? Therein is the investor’s dilemma. Elsewhere, in the tech space, Texas Instruments added to the bulls’ woes after the bell with disappointing numbers. Sun Mircosystems soared as Oracle stepped up to the plate left vacant by Big Blue with a $7bn deal. Oil fell below $46 barrel.

Stock Markets Rising a Wall of Worry or Slope of Hope? / Stock-Markets / Financial Markets 2009
Banks given a lot of slack to report better earnings. Citigroup Inc., the U.S. bank rescued by $45 billion in U.S. taxpayer funds, ended a five- quarter losing streak with a $1.6 billion profit on trading gains and an accounting benefit for companies in distress.
Citigroup posted a $2.5 billion gain from accounting rules that allow companies to profit when their own creditworthiness declines. The rules reflect the possibility that a company could buy back its own liabilities at a discount, which under traditional accounting methods would result in a profit.

Another Late Rally Lifts Stock Market Indices / Stock-Markets / Financial Markets 2009
It seemed like déjà vu for the markets yesterday. They had a slow choppy start before a late rally resulted in more healthy gains. Traders yet again shrugged off concerns about the economy and instead bet that crucial earnings reports will impress. Consumer discretionary stocks staged the best advance with tech stocks not far behind. Will indices do it again heading into the weekend?

Late Day Stock Market Rally Lifts Indices / Stock-Markets / Financial Markets 2009
Markets were choppy all day yesterday until the end. Despite lacking a clear catalyst, the Dow Jones picked up over 100 points in the hour before close to finish the day up 1.38%. Just five of the index’s 30 components failed to join the rally, including three tech stocks. The bear market rally rolls on for now. Note that the Dow Futures are off about 0.8% this morning after a weak European open and Asian session.Read full article... Read full article...

Stock Market Indices Fall on Profit Taking / Stock-Markets / Financial Markets 2009
Indices fell yesterday due to profit-taking and a further reminder of the weak economy with weak US retail sales figures. The bulls took a breather from their recent run, but they were due a rest. The Dow Jones fell 1.71%, which is nothing really when compared to the 21.98% surge over the previous five weeks. What happens today is crucial. An up day with the bulls returning could signal that there are plenty of legs left in this rally. However, another fall will see the positive momentum halted even more and may see a return to risk aversion as traders don’t want to be caught on the long side as they go through earnings season.Read full article... New Stock Market and Commodities Bubbles Brewing in Shanghai and Wall Street / Stock-Markets / Financial Markets 2009
After Shocks from the October Meltdown, - October is famous for stock markets crashes, - the Crash of 1929, “Black Monday” 1987, the Asian Contagion crash in October 1997, and the Sub-Prime crash of October 2008. US Treasury chief Henry Paulson’s ill-fated decision on Sept 14th, to pull the plug on the 158-year old brokerage firm of Lehman Brothers, set in motion a horrific chain of events that unleashed a torrent of panic selling on commodity and global stock markets, froze the European and US banking systems, and changed the direction American politics for years to come.

Goldman Sachs Bounces To Q1 Profit / Stock-Markets / Financial Markets 2009
US indices yesterday managed to cut losses they had racked up during the day to finish only slightly down on a choppy session. Futures on the S&P 500 are slipping after rising to 858.73 yesterday – the highest level since February, mostly on speculation that banks’ profits for the first quarter will be better than expected. European markets rose in early trade after the Easter break, with miners benefitting from more solid metals prices and financial stocks gaining ground following strong numbers from Goldman Sachs.Read full article... Global Stock Markets Extend Gains on Encouraging Earnings Pre-announcements / Stock-Markets / Financial Markets 2009
Five in a row! Notwithstanding sentiment for equities waxing and waning for most of the Easter-shortened week, bourses closed strongly on Friday and capped a five-week winning streak - the first since October 2007 for the major MSCI and US stock market indices. An encouraging pre-announcement of first-quarter results by Wells Fargo (WFC) provided some confidence for the nascent earnings season and gave a healthy boost to the financial sector and overall market.
