Christmas Eve Online Sales 2013 - Next, John Lewis, Curry's, Debenhams, Argos... / Personal_Finance / Shopping

By: Nadeem_Walayat

Christmas storms may have brought Britain's transport system to a halt but without much effect on the shopping frenzy underway which today saw the mainstream broadcast news channels busy reporting from Britain's packed shopping malls as an estimated £3 billion will be spent just today, many shoppers were asked for their views on what they were looking for prompting many to comment that they were out and about and getting into the Christmas spirit as they search for sales bargains, as though this is what Christmas is all about i.e. a month long consumer shopping celebration to max out credit cards on. The actual story of Christmas has long since turned into just another series of special effects movies and not good ones at that as today we can see space stations in the sky with beds that can bring people back from deaths door Lazarus style (Elysium), against which the Jesus story just cannot compete.

Next, John Lewis Christmas Sales 2013 - All High Street Start Dates / Personal_Finance / Shopping

By: Nadeem_Walayat

It's Christmas! That means a month long media induced buying frenzy for the masses to engage in as sales fever pitch reaches its maximum intensity in the run up to Boxing Day. However, a word of caution as this is NOT 2008 when many retailers were teetering on the edge of bankruptcy that would claim many such as Woolworth's and Comet, and thus were panicked into real deep discounts to quickly offload stock to improve their cash-flows. Instead, now we have a strong UK economic recovery underway that is resulting in an highly engineered sales season which started off with over inflated prices calculated to generated discounts of as much as 75% so that items can still be sold for a hefty profit.

UK Christmas Sales 2013 Start Dates, Retailers Deep Discounts / Personal_Finance / Shopping

By: Nadeem_Walayat

A fast accelerating UK economy towards growth rates that academic economists cannot imagine today (well beyond 3% GDP) looks set to manifest itself during the holiday season as a debt fuelled spending binge as the cathedrals if modern Britain will be jam packed with shoppers afflicted with sales fever searching for bargains as Christmas has morphed into a month long relentless advertisement to spend, spend and then spend some more in January.

Rent to Own - Don't Fall for This New Old Retail Sales Trick / Personal_Finance / Shopping

By: Money_Morning

Keith Fitz-Gerald writes: Kmart has joined a long and "distinguished" list of retail chains who offer a rent-to-own program.

It's a sign of the times... Only, rather than being a sign of economic recovery, it's a sign of retail desperation.

Ostensibly, these programs are intended to benefit cash-strapped consumers who couldn't otherwise afford to buy big-ticket items. In reality, the program turns consumer goods like a $300 television into a $415 purchase, according to Bloomberg.

Furniture123 Customer Review - Bargain Home Furniture or Potential Nightmare? / ConsumerWatch / Shopping

By: N_Walayat

The UK based online furniture store, Furniture123.com / Furniture123.co.uk purports to "make our customer's lives easy (as easy as 123!)", however the sales pitch may not live up to real customer experience:

For example I ordered a Basel Oak Dining Table from Furniture123 on 8th of Feb 2012, the first warning bell rang when the company failed to send an email acknowledging the order and delivery.

Christmas, January Sales 2012, High Street, Online Best Store Discounts List / Personal_Finance / Shopping

By: Nadeem_Walayat

Best Financial Markets Analysis ArticleDiscount hungry smartphone using shoppers fuel the continuing sales that began online on Christmas Eve and in part switched to the high streets and shopping malls on Boxing day. The sales are expected to continue well into January 2012 as the post Christmas sales boost is unlikely to make up for what is likely to turnout to be a bad December for retailers. With further potential for high street retailers disappointment as the increasingly more sophisticated smartphone using shoppers use the high streets merely as showrooms before finally opting to buy online as part of the shopping mega-trend of online stores putting the high streets out of business.

Boxing Day Sales List Upto 75% Discounts at High Street Stores John Lewis, Next and Debenhams / Personal_Finance / Shopping

By: Nadeem_Walayat

Best Financial Markets Analysis ArticleBritain's high streets and shopping malls are expected to be full on Boxing day with shoppers taking advantage of advertised deep discounts of as much as 75% as the Christmas Day online sales in part switch to the High Streets, with early starts for many stores such as 6am for Next and 7am for Debenhams. However given the fact that many of the sales are already online for over 40 hours before the high street stores open, there is great potential for high street retailers disappointment especially as increasingly more sophisticated smartphone using cash strapped shoppers use the high streets merely as showrooms before finally buying online as part of the shopping meg-trend of online stores putting high street's out of business.
