The Stealth Renationalization Of Energy In The UK / Politics / Energy Resources
OLIGARCHIC TAKEOVER
Professor Colin Robinson, in a Dec 2013 study published by the UK Institute of Economic Affairs, argues that the energy sector in the UK has been effectively renationalized. He says the proof is that centralized energy planning is back, and this is the root cause of skyrocketing fuel and energy prices, fuel poverty, and accelerating de-industrialisation as industrialists flee the high cost of energy.

The Global Economy is Running Out of Time / Politics / Energy Resources
Energy drives all economic activity. Scientifically based evidence, recently to hand, leads to the conclusion that humanity has approximately 15 years to get its energy house in order. If we fail to achieve this outcome the global economy will not deteriorate, it will collapse. The flip side of this statement is that if we succeed – which is eminently possible from a technical perspective – we can look forward to a long period of global economic stability, if not growth. The obstacles to success are egocentricism and hubris of those in power. In the article below, Brian Bloom summarises key evidence to prove that the current status quo has a bias towards failure in all the world’s industrialised democracies. Urgent action is required.

Europe's Very Distressed Energy Transition / Politics / Energy Resources
DISTRESSED ASSETS
Excepting Europe's stalled and shrunken, and totally uneconomic biofuels programme, and its more successful energy saving, the continent's energy transition is almost entirely focused on the power sector, aiming to “back out” fossil fuels for power generation by nearly-100% within 35 years.
Not so long ago, in 2008, Europe's top-20 market traded electric power companies bundled into European utility indices like Stoxx Europe 600 Utilities, the Bloomberg European Utilities Index and the MSCI European Utilities Index had a combined market value of more than 1000 billion euros.

Why Peak Oil Was Wrong, Is US Economic Growth Over? / Commodities / Energy Resources
After last week's discussion of the Affordable Care Act, it would be easy to drift off into all of the negative consequences of the current problems in Washington DC. There's just so much negative energy every time you turn on the TV that it simply drains you. I am well aware of what's happening and why, and yet I still find myself weary simply from the process of trying to follow what's happening. If I feel that way, it's no wonder the polls show that the general public's attitude is "a plague on all your houses." Of course, the snafus always seem to get resolved, but you just wonder how worthwhile all the drama is.

An American Energy Revolution / Commodities / Energy Resources
In Texas these days, there’s a feeling of absolute and unwavering confidence in the concept of an American energy revolution. From the depths of reserves to the richness of the energy, an incredible transformation is taking place.
We’ve been talking about the significant impact of the U.S.’s oil production for a while now, but the buzz about shale oil and gas is only getting louder. At Morgan Stanley’s energy forum in Houston in August, Director of Research John Derrick and Portfolio Manager Evan Smith said shale was the prevailing topic.

How to Invest in the Future of Geothermal Energy / Commodities / Energy Resources
Before you click away from this article in the belief that geothermal is just another “green” technology that can’t compete with coal or oil, consider the following…
Geothermal is a renewable energy source that is expected to grow fivefold in the next seven years and produces more than double the energy of solar and wind combined. And here is the real rub… unlike solar power, geothermal is cheaper to produce than coal, oil or other “dirty” sources of energy. The most common form of geothermal power costs about $64 a megawatt-hour, according to Bloomberg New Energy Finance, below the $78 for coal, $82 for onshore wind turbines and $142 for traditional solar panels.

Extreme Energy, Extreme Implications / Commodities / Energy Resources
If oil and gas is a profoundly dynamic phenomenon, then so too must be environmental risk and conflicts over natural resources--and we are not getting the full picture from the mainstream media, according to Michael T. Klare, professor of peace and world security studies at Hampshire College, TomDispatch blogger, and author of Rising Powers, Shrinking Planet: The New Geopolitics of Energy (Metropolitan Books, 2008). As risk multiply, conventional sources evaporate and we are left with "extreme" energy, renewables may be the only way to avoid war and disaster.

Russia is The Greatest Threat to the Energy Markets / Politics / Energy Resources
Dr. Kent Moors writes: As Yogi Berra aptly put it, It's deja vu all over again.
The Soviet gulag state is coming back and this time it could wreak havoc on the world's energy markets.
I began my energy career in Russia. Back then it was part of a sprawling Soviet Union. For the past 23 years there have been 15 independent countries in its place.

Hidden Water Costs Set to Boost Energy Prices / Commodities / Energy Resources
Dr. Kent Moors writes: This may sound funny, but water availability is becoming an issue in energy generation. And it may start to impact prices.
The issue here is not the environmental impact of water usage. That is quite a different debate.
What I'm talking about today is the water supply/demand issue.

French Can-Can Use Fracking - Only For Geothermal Heat / Politics / Energy Resources
AND THEY CAN DO THE TWIST
In a major policy twist on the subject of hydraulic fracturing ('fracking'), France's Ecology minister Delphine Batho has announced that fracking is now politically-correct, clean, safe and approved by all right-thinking (we mean left-thinking) ecologists. Her party machine, the EELV, or Europe Ecologie Les Verts only exists, today, thanks to Francois Hollande's choice of including "greenies" in his vastly unpopular government. EELV is now all-but collapsed as a vote-winner. In 2012, it gained a minuscule 2.5% of votes in the presidential elections with its candidate the retired anti-corruption magistrate Eva Joly, who is Norwegian origin and despite working in France for decades still has problems talking French. Supposedly that made her even more 'chic et choc' when she led the battle against fracking, with high-rank EELV party faithfuls like Jose Bove, who among other things struggles against GM foods and the McDonald burger threat "a mortal attack on French culture".

Fortune Favors the Bold Energy Investor / Commodities / Energy Resources
Tough markets have the average investor crying uncle, but now is not the time to lament losses—it's time to bargain shop, suggests Marin Katusa, senior editor of Casey's Energy Dividends. China is snatching up energy prospects around the world in anticipation of ever-tightening oil markets. Meanwhile, there is already money to be made in international markets where consumers are paying double the price for U.S. natural gas. In his interview with The Energy Report, Katusa says bold investors who target the right companies could "get a Rolex for the price of a Timex."

Three Reasons Why the Energy "Experts" are Wrong / Commodities / Energy Resources
Dr. Kent Moors writes: Last week, another batch of oversimplifications attempted to explain a significant decline in energy stocks.
Excuses ranged from declining demand to shale oil and gas gluts. Others pointed toward a general market Armageddon.

Four Timely Investment Moves For The Next Three Crises 2013 / Commodities / Energy Resources
Dr. Kent Moors writes: As I wrote last Thursday, the aftermath of the fiscal cliff deal requires some restructuring of energy sector holdings.
We are currently in a brief period between crises. Nothing was resolved in the eleventh (and a half) hour compromise.
The truth is there are still three huge fights on the horizon - revisiting the sequestration (automatic spending cuts) portion of the fiscal cliff, spending versus taxation in the budget, and raising the debt ceiling.

Fiscal Cliff Deal Boosts Profits for Energy Investors / Commodities / Energy Resources
Dr. Kent Moors writes: Marina and I are still here in the Bahamas where our Internet and TV reception has been very sporadic over the past two weeks. It started improving on New Year's Day, just in time for us to watch our favorite situation comedy.
You know the one. It's called Congress.
And after much political jockeying and self-serving speeches from a largely empty floor, the House finally voted to pass the Senate's stopgap fiscal cliff Band-Aid.

US Energy Independence: The Next Big Thing for 2013? / Commodities / Energy Resources
Energy investment is about more than just the commodities; it's about growth. That's why, for example, the emerging economies theme has been an important one for investors who know that every business and modern home in Brazil, Russia, China or the African continent will need to keep the lights on somehow. But the next big thing for 2013 may be in our own backyards: the drive toward U.S. energy independence. How feasible is this goal, and how can investors profit from it? With this question in mind, The Energy Report looked back at some of the most memorable interviews of 2012 for expert advice on how to get positioned for it.
