Seven Ways to Profit from the GOP’s Pledge to Sustain Defense Spending / Companies / Sector Analysis
Larry D. Spears writes: Investors typically hate it when a stock bombs, but there are also times when bombs can make for good investments - and right now could be one of them.
With the Republicans seizing control of the U.S. House of Representatives and making gains in the Senate in Tuesday's mid-term elections, it now seems far more likely that the GOP will be able to honor its pledge not to cut defense outlays as it seeks to rein in discretionary government spending.

Outstanding Investor Profit Opportunity as China Goes Gaga for Gaming / Stock-Markets / Sector Analysis
Doug Hornig, Editor, Casey’s Extraordinary Technology writes: Developing nations are playing technological leapfrog.
In the developed world, when we think of technology, the roots of much of what we do today were born decades, or even a century, ago. While the evolution has been fast paced, the progression from there through today is a straight line from the technologies that preceded them. A television program is still a television program. A phone call is still a phone call. The devices might look different and certainly do more, but the lineage is obvious.

The Backdoor Investor Play to Macau Casinos / Companies / Sector Analysis
The National Bureau of Economic Research declared the recession over in June 2009, but don’t tell that to the American entertainment industry. 2010 has been a very difficult year for just about every sector of the entertainment business as cash-strapped consumers are looking for inexpensive ways to entertain themselves.

Stock Market Sector Strength Indicates Returning Confidence / Stock-Markets / Sector Analysis
Analysts and economists often refer to the strength or weakness in certain key industrial groups as evidence of a recovering or declining economy. During the recovery phase of a typical business cycle, there is usually greater buying emphasis on industry sectors that reflect a more optimistic stance. This wave of confidence can shift short-term to a more defensive approach.

An In-depth Look at U.S. Retail Stocks / Stock-Markets / Sector Analysis
While Americans haven’t completely abandoned their spendthrift ways, there’s no doubt that the typical shopper is thinking a lot more about their purchases … and in general, our nation is revisiting the idea of saving for a rainy day.
I’ll discuss the broad implications of this shift some other time. Today, I’d like to talk about the specific companies most affected by our nation’s newfound frugality — the retailers.

Biotech, the Genetics of Investing / Stock-Markets / Sector Analysis
Doug Hornig, Editor, Casey’s Extraordinary Technology writes: If you had a previously incurable genetic condition and scientists came up with a treatment for it, you’d jump at the chance to take advantage. That’s a no-brainer. But what if you had the opportunity to invest in a company deeply involved in just such cutting-edge research?

Consumer Debt Financed Demand Deleveraging Reality Check for Retailers / Companies / Sector Analysis
Having worked for a big box retailer for 14 years, I understand the dynamics of a high growth rollout of stores as a key to increasing market share and profits. Some of the best retail names in the US have practiced the identical strategy of concentrating many stores in each market to drive the small competitors out of business. This strategy worked wonders for Lowes, Wal-Mart, Target and Kohl's during the early part of this decade. The combination of solid same store sales and opening new stores is a fantastic combination during good times. The results actually make the CEOs of these companies think they are brilliant. Their store expansion models based on rosy assumptions are followed like they can't go wrong.Read full article... Read full article...

Asian Airlines: Taking Off and Flying High / Companies / Sector Analysis
I’m beat!
From door to door, it took me 35 hours to fly to Seattle via Bangkok, Manila, and Seoul. These trips were hard enough when I was a young man, but they are like a death march now that I’m in my 50’s.

MLPs High Yield With High Risks / Companies / Sector Analysis
Larry D. Spears writes: With bank and money market rates bumping along between 1% and 2%, 30-year Treasury yields barely edging above 4%, and many old standby companies having slashed or eliminated their dividends, it's been a rough year or two for income-oriented investors.

How to Find Recession Proof Stocks / Stock-Markets / Sector Analysis
Isn’t it amazing how quickly the mainstream media talk has turned from green shoots and recoveries to double-dip recessions and a whole laundry list of new economic worries?
The whimsical nature of the news aside, there certainly are plenty of reasons for concern as some of my colleagues have been pointing out in their recent Money and Markets columns:

Ford and Toyota, A Tale of Two Car Companies / Companies / Sector Analysis
It’s spring time and we’re thinking about maybe getting a new car. That and the recent problems at Toyota, plus the strong sales at Ford, and the not to distant bankruptcy of GM and Chrysler, got us wondering how the car company stocks are doing — not that we are hot to own car company stocks (although we are hot to own a new car).

Retail Stocks XRT ETF No Signs of Peaking / Companies / Sector Analysis
The SPDR Retail ETF (XRT) is one heck of a bullish chart, which includes names like Whole Foods (WFMI), Sears (SHLD), OfficeMax (OMX), HSN (HSNI), Netflix (NFLX), Dress Barn (DBRN), and Family Dollar Stores (FDO). Purely from a pattern perspective, the XRT shows no sign of peaking, and is poised to hurdle Wed.'s high at 42.64. If the price structure moves vertically higher into a new upleg, it COULD make a run at its upper channel resistance lines in the 44.50- 45.50 target zone, or 5% to 7% more upside.

I’m a consumer. You’re a consumer. In fact, just about everyone you know is a consumer. But in these tough economic times, we often have to prioritize.
On the other hand, not everyone is closely watching every penny they spend. Some people are making — and spending — more money than ever! So today I’m going to tell you how to use exchange traded funds (ETFs) to take advantage of a recovery in consumer spending.

New Stock Sector Leadership Ahead / Stock-Markets / Sector Analysis
We just added new tools to analyze sector allocation on our U.S. Economics Monthly research. As of March 2010, the four sectors with highest momentums are consumer discretionary, industrials, technology and financials but that last one is starting to lose some steam (1 to 4). Can we expect these market outperformers to keep being the winners of the next 12 months? What is history telling us?

US Retail Stocks Sector Surges. Consumer Confidence Returns / Stock-Markets / Sector Analysis
In the February newsletter I highlighted the consistent upward strength of the S&P Retail Index. This leading indicator of consumer confidence and thus economic health, had consistently outperformed many industry sectors throughout 2009 and also the broad-based S&P 500. Fundamental data generally looked unimpressive last year and many market watchers doubted the return of this important industry.
