Inflation Eating into 99% of Standard UK Savings Accounts / Personal_Finance / Savings Accounts

By: MoneyFacts

Savers are still being left at the mercy of inflation eroding their hard-earned cash, despite a boom in the number of rate rises in the market. Today, less than 1% of the standard savings market can beat a return of 2.70%, meaning that 99% of the standard savings account market* is being eroded by inflation.

Savings rate increases have outweighed cuts for 19 consecutive months, with Moneyfacts.co.uk recording 219 rate rises in August compared with just 28 cuts. Furthermore, statistics released today show the Consumer Prices Index (CPI) rose to 2.7% during August, meaning there are only 4 fixed rate bonds (based on a £10,000 deposit) that can match or beat inflation*. Within that, there are just 2 fixed bonds that beat 2.70%, which represents less than a 1% share of the standard savings market.

Keep Your Money Separate from Your Spouse says Wall Street Veteran / Personal_Finance / Money Saving

By: Jared_Dillian

I met my wife at gifted and talented camp in the summer of 1989, when I randomly put my head in her lap and asked for a kiss.

Boy, did I get lucky.

I got lucky because we are both frugal and didn’t even know it. We didn’t fill out a questionnaire on money habits before we kissed each other.

Some people have the misfortune to be frugal and fall in love with a high roller.

How to Add Zoom to SmartPhone Cameras - MUIO Telescope 12X55mm Review / Personal_Finance / Mobile Technology

By: HGR

The cameras in today's smartphone's such as the Samsung Galaxy S7,S8 and S9 are better than today's compact cameras costing in the region of £200. For instance better slow motion and higher resolution 4K footage when the compacts are still carrying HD specs. So why do most amateur photographers and film makers still rather prefer a cheaper lower quality compact camera than a smartphone? Well its the lack of zoom on smartphone's, so here after much searching on Amazon I settled on the 12X50mm telescope by MUI that cost £30 at the time of review (Amazon UK £30 https://amzn.to/2QErj2y).

Does Gambling Regulation Work - A Case Study / Personal_Finance / Gambling

By: Submissions

Sunil Singh writes: Time and time again, we as a species have tested the notion of prohibition, and time and time again, it completely fails. It doesn’t matter whether it’s alcohol in the 1930s, cannabis since the 1960s, or banned Western movies in the likes of Soviet Union and North Korea. If people want to do something, they will find a way.

One of the largest problems with prohibition is that it gives rise to a black market. Depending what is being prohibited, this can have rather dangerous consequences. We’ve all heard the stories of poisonous liquor pushed out by the mob in prohibition America. Likewise, recreational drugs distributed on black markets have absolutely no quality control. Examples where a policy of decriminalisation or legality show how sensible regulation is more effective than outright prohibition. Do you think you’d be able to buy a bag of cannabis tainted with fibre glass to increase its weight from a licensed dispensary in Colorado? Well, you can in the UK where the substance is still illegal.

Best Car Jump Starter 2018 Review - Oittm 1500A Peak Current Battery Booster / Personal_Finance / Motoring

By: HGR

This a review of the Oittm car jump starter that can apparently jump start a 6.5 litre diesel engine that I bought from Amazon for £80. My wife's car battery fails every few months probably because of the way she drives with lights permanently on. So I was hunting for a compact car battery jump starter so I don't need to come out and Jump start the car every few months and finally settled on this one by Oittm because it also has 2 USB ports so I can use to for more than just Jump starting cars i.e. a mega battery pack when out and about.

GCSE Exam Results Day Shock - Video! / Personal_Finance / Educating Children

By: N_Walayat

It's GCSE results day today, where 600,000 16 year olds across England and Wales will have been busy popping down to their secondary schools to find out if they managed to get their target GCSE grades for the courses they intend on enrolling for September start.

Overall minimum pass grades awarded of C/4 are marginally down on last year but English is up, Whilst a C is a pass, given the competition to get accepted on courses then the ultimate objectives are to achieve the A* and 9 grades for selected subjects. So if a student is choosing to enrol on say 3 A-levels in September then the objective would be to achieve 3 A*'s in those 3 chosen subjects as a sign of having the capability to go on and achieve a similar grade at A level.
