How Can Bank of America Drive Better Efficiency? / Companies / Banking Stocks

By: Bloomberg

Brian Moynihan, CEO of Bank of America, spoke with Bloomberg TV’s Erik Schatzker about the bank's earnings and performance.

Moynihan said that the efficiency ratio should be 500 BPS lower and the company has a plan to get it there. When asked about how he will do it, Moynihan said: "The headcount will come down because there were 60 percent people costs. There's not enough other costs to save a lot of money, but question is how you do that."

Walmart Stock Craters On Profit Warning - The Fatal Blindness of Greed / Companies / Corporate Earnings

By: Jesse

"America's great now -- it's never been greater.

Our kids are going to live so much better than we do now." Warren Buffett

“Among 21 countries in the study the U.S. ranks second-to-last in the percentage of its GDP spent on benefits for families, despite one of the highest relative child poverty rates of the comparable high-income countries. [only Turkey was worse because it failed to provide any data]” Child Trends, World Family Map 2015

For Corporations And Hedge Funds, The Next Recession Is Already Here / Companies / Recession 2015

By: John_Rubino

Wal-Mart just announced flat year-over-year sales, causing its shares to fall by 9% and wiping $20 billion from its market cap. Which would be unremarkable if the disappointment was an aberration. But it’s not. Earnings season is off to a brutal start, with big names announcing big misses all over the place. Meanwhile, the rare good numbers are mostly the result of blatant (and therefore ineffective) financial engineering. Some examples:

Forget the Yield Curve- Banks Stocks Are a Bargain / Companies / Banking Stocks

By: Sol_Palha

A wise man will make more opportunities than he finds. - Francis Bacon

The press is giving too much credence to the effect an interest rate hike would have on the markets and on the financial sector. First of all, the fact that the Fed has been debating whether or not to raise rates by a paltry meaningless 0.25 basis points speaks volumes. The Fed clearly understands that this recovery is nothing but smoke and mirrors; the main driving force behind being hot money.

VW's Scandal Comes at a Bad Time For Germany / Companies / Germany

By: Rodney_Johnson

The German economy has been nothing if not impressive. In the face of ugly economic circumstances across Europe, this country held fast to fiscal discipline while staying on track with exports. Hence, Germany ran budget surpluses for the last three years and has a cost of capital so low that its bond yields rival that of Japan.

Then, out of nowhere, comes a claim of corporate cheating that rocked iconic Volkswagen, the “People’s Car” company, maker of the famous Beetle.

Glencore Rout Blamed on Short Sellers Playing With CDS / Companies / Metals & Mining

By: Bloomberg

John Mack, director at Glencore and former CEO of Morgan Stanley, joined hosts Stephanie Ruhle and David Westin on Bloomberg TV's new flagship morning program, Bloomberg <GO>. He spoke about the stability of Glencore amid the global selloff in commodities.  He also discussed why he is bullish on China, 2008 and responsibility for malfeasance at financial firms, and Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign.

Mack said fund managers shorting shares of Glencore and playing with credit-default swaps were responsible for recent volatility: “You have fund managers who short the stock, play with the CDS; that’s exactly what happened during the crisis.  I mean, that’s fine for them to do that.  That creates a lot of volatility."

The Coming Corporate "Crime Wave" / Companies / Government Intervention

By: William_Anderson

William L. Anderson writes: In a recent appearance before Congress, Deputy Attorney General Sally Quillian Yates declared that the US Department of Justice is going to ratchet up its prosecution of individuals employed in corporations as part of a larger push against “white collar crime.” There is no doubt that such prosecutions will be very popular to a large section of voters, given that presidential candidates like Bernie Sanders, Hillary Clinton, and Martin O’Malley, along with Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren pretty much have declared that nearly all American businesses are part of a massive criminal conspiracy that must be brought down by federal authorities.

First it was the commodities bubble that blew up in mid-2014, which caused the collapse of energy and commodity stocks -they are now down between 40-80%.

It also caused the end of the corporate credit bubble in high yield bonds and bank loans over the second half of 2014 and into this year.

The Asian Megaproject Could Make You (and Your Grandchildren) Rich / Companies / Infrastructure

By: ...

Peter Krauth writes: It's obvious that China has superpower ambitions, but now we have, quite literally, a map detailing how she'll get there.

It will be on the "New Silk Road," spanning the entire Eurasian landmass – with links to Africa and Oceania, too.

Such a transport corridor is an ancient concept, but what's being built now will be far bigger and more lucrative than anything the old Han emperors could have ever imagined.
