Cathie Wood Goes All in on Teladoc, ARKK INSANE Noob Investing Strategy! / Companies / Exchange Traded Funds

By: Nadeem_Walayat

I really feel sorry for investors who have got sucked into ARKK hype for as they obviously failed to realise that she was just spouting a total load of BS and so got sucked into the ARKK hype sales vortex, reminds me of people who are brainwashed into buying Timeshare apartments that they come to regret for the rest of their lives! Which is the case with ARK! ARK K is NEVER coming back to it's highs let alone X4 over the last 5 years! which is what I have repeatedly warned as my December video in response to Cathie's then latest hype videos illustrates. At the time ARKK was around $95 and she was spouting it would X4 over the next 5 years. Today ARKK is trading at $40, that's over a 50% drop from where I forecast it would be by now some 5 months ago, and down 75% from it's high!

A warning to all the hodlers of such growth tech stocks and funds such as Cathy Woods's ARKK, the price drops may not even be half way done!

You know how much garbage is out there when analysts stop following the fundamentals and pluck metrics out of think air. For instance Price to Earnings is THE primary metric but for many stocks that populate the likes of Cathy Wood garbage funds that doe snot work, so what do they use? Price to Sales? Trading Crude Oil ETFs in Foreign Currencies: What to Focus On / Commodities / Exchange Traded Funds

By: Paul_Rejczak

Trading energy ETFs outside of US exchanges can be tricky, as it often means lower liquidity and some latency, but is it worth trying? Definitely!

Let’s do a comparative study between the WTI Crude Oil (CL) and an Exchange-Traded Fund (ETF) tracking this energy commodity as the underlying asset.

Prelude

In the previous two-part series (see Part I & Part II), we presented different ways to trade energies such as stocks, ETFs, CFDs and futures. We saw that picking the right instrument or vehicle depended on businesses, regions, risk profiles, psychology, etc. So, today, as an example, we will compare the well-known WTI Crude Oil (CL) futures contract (quoted in US dollars) with a 2:1 (2x) leveraged ETF traded in Toronto, in Canadian dollars.

How to Invest in ETFs in the UK / Companies / Exchange Traded Funds

By: Dumitru_Midon

Exchange-Traded Funds (ETFs) are openly traded on a stock exchange and are different from mutual funds. You can buy and sell them throughout the day and not wait until the end of the day to determine the price like you would in mutual funds.

As the number of investors continues to increase globally in recent times, the UK has also been a spotlight, as it houses some of the best and highest paying investors today. This is one of the countries with the largest economies in the world with a GDP per capita recorded to be $42,330.

If you reside in the UK and would like to invest in ETFs, this article will serve as a quick guide to help you get started.

FXA Bearish Cycle From The July 2011 Highs / Companies / Exchange Traded Funds

By: ElliottWaveForecast

Firstly the FXA ETF fund is the Australian dollar tracking fund that has an Inception Date of 06/21/2006.  With that said the fund mainly reflects the currency spot price of the AUDUSD forex pair. The data available from the Reserve Bank of Australia at their website suggests the spot price was 1.4875 back in 1973 to 1974 that would translate into an FXA price of  around 148.75.  It should be obvious that is a long term downtrend. I believe the bearish cycle analysis suggests it can go lower to possibly retest those lows eventually.

Back before the FXA fund inception date, the AUDUSD spot currency price reached what is still the currency low in April 2001 at .4778. From there the currency pair went up in three swings until July 2011 at a high of 1.1080. That translated into the FXA ETF fund price high of 110.99 in July 2011. This is where the monthly Elliott wave analysis  begins on the chart below.

The Evils Of Leveraged ETF’s and Those That Suggest Them / Companies / Exchange Traded Funds

By: Avi_Gilburt

As some of you may know me by now, I run a trading room with over 3500 traders, have over 450 money manager clients, have over 23,000 followers on Seeking Alpha, and have the 6th largest service out of the 169 that are offered in the Seeking Alpha Marketplace (even though I am a technical analyst on that fundamental analysis web site). I have certainly come a long way since I first opened the doors to my trading room a little over 6 years ago.

During the 6 years I have been running my trading room, I have seen what traders do right and what traders do wrong. One of the biggest pitfalls I have seen that trip traders and investors up is the inappropriate use of leverage.

ETF Investors Got Screwed Again -- When Will They Learn? / Stock-Markets / Exchange Traded Funds

By: Avi_Gilburt

As many of you know, I run a trading room with well over 3500 members, including over 450 money managers. I have seen the good, the bad, and the ugly as far as what traders and investors do through the years. And, no matter how much I warn about the pitfalls in the market, many chose to ignore me, and eventually learn on their own the hard way.

To this end, this article is focused mostly upon the evils of leveraged ETF’s and those that advise their use as “buy and hold” vehicles.

Stock Investing: ETF Exposure in Emerging Middle Eastern Markets / Companies / Exchange Traded Funds

By: Richard_Cox

Stock investors that are looking to take positions in emerging markets have started to look to the Middle East in growing numbers.  The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has proven to be one of the most stable economies in the region and, as a result, we have started to see more stock market selections offered through exchange traded funds.  One name to watch here is the iShares MSCI UAE Capped ETF (NASDAQ:UAE), which is showing some interesting chart activity as it attempts to break out of its recent trading ranges.

If You Are Long Broad ETFs Like VT, You Have Given Up / Companies / Exchange Traded Funds

By: John_Mauldin

BY JARED DILLIAN : I am going to melt your brain today. Vanguard has an ETF (ticker: VT) that allows you to get long world stock markets.

This raises all sorts of interesting philosophical questions.

You see, if you are long every stock in the world, you are basically long global economic growth. Which is weird! Who has an opinion on global economic growth?

Few Investors Understand The Difference Between A Good And A Bad ETF / Companies / Exchange Traded Funds

A Former ETF Head At Lehman Brothers: Here’s How To Choose The Best ETF For You / Companies / Exchange Traded Funds

By: John_Mauldin

BY JARED DILLIAN : There is a massive price war going on in ETF-land. Issuers are falling over themselves in the race to the bottom in fees.

Clearly, they’re doing it because it works. For many investors, low fees were the main reason you are invested in ETFs.

I saw some funds the other day that had a .04% expense ratio. That’s four basis points, meaning that if you invest $10,000, you pay $4 in fees.

Exchange-Traded Funds Make Decisions Easy / Stock-Markets / Exchange Traded Funds

By: Chris_Vermeulen

Stock Market Forecast Big Picture: The broad stock market is working through a more complex corrective price pattern. My recent forecast, as displayed in the chart below, indicates that the next leg up is toward 2500.  The market may be about to start a larger A-B-C correction to test the 2300 level to fully cleanse itself, before starting the next leg up. Volatile Week for Financial ETFs / Stock-Markets / Exchange Traded Funds

By: Nicholas_Kitonyi

Earnings season is around, and it tends to add some volatility back into the market. Now, major banks and financial firms have already reported their earnings, most beat expectations. However, there were also mixed results with financials. Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE: GS) and Morgan Stanley (NYSE: MS) were some notable earnings that surprised the Street. Consequently, this added some volatility to exchange-traded funds (ETFs), such as the Financial Select Sector SPDR Fund (NYSEARCA: XLF) and Vanguard Financials ETF (NYSEARCA: VFH).

Here’s Everything You Need to Know About the ETF Business / Companies / Exchange Traded Funds

By: John_Mauldin

BY JARED DILLIAN : People still think of me as an “ETF guy,” even though it’s been years since I’ve made markets in ETFs.

I was in the ETF business during the Jurassic period, when ETFs were mainly trading vehicles, not something you really invested in.

But I’ve seen the entire arc of the industry, from inception (those crazy days of the QQQ on the AMEX) all the way to the present, disrupting the mutual fund industry and gathering trillions in assets.

ETF Black Magic: What’s Really in the Hat? / Companies / Exchange Traded Funds

By: ...

MoneyMorning.com Shah Gilani writes: In the investment markets – the portions that affect you and me – exchange-traded funds (ETFs) have emerged as the ultimate market Disruptor.

The first ETF debuted back in 1993. But those funds really came into their own in the past dozen years. During that stretch, in fact, ETFs have displaced regular mutual funds as the investment of choice: The amount of money ETFs hold has skyrocketed more than 2,000% – compared with a paltry 120% for regular funds.

Four Stock Market Black Monday Takeaways Wall Street Hopes ETF Investors Never Understand / Stock-Markets / Exchange Traded Funds

By: ...

MoneyMorning.com Keith Fitz-Gerald writes: Exchange-traded funds – ETFs for short – are billed as among the most investor-friendly products ever created, thanks to low fees, intra-day pricing, and unprecedented flexibility versus the mutual funds they’ve ostensibly “replaced.”

In reality, ETFs are yet another Wall Street creation designed to separate you from your money.

Proponents will undoubtedly cry foul as will many Wall Street professionals when they read this. That’s understandable – they’ve got a lot to lose. According to Morningstar, there are more than 1,400 ETFs trading in U.S. markets, holding an estimated $3 trillion in assets. In 2005 that figure stood at $300 billion. In 1990 it stood at nothing.

The Role of GLD and SLV Gold and Silver ETF's / Commodities / Exchange Traded Funds

By: Alasdair_Macleod

In August 2011 I wrote to the Financial Services Authority to seek confirmation that the London-based custodians of SPDR Gold Trust (GLD) and iShares Silver Trust (SLV) were being regulated as custodians, despite the fact that physical bullion is not a regulated investment. After some chasing on my part I finally got a response, kicking my letter firmly into touch. The FSA accepted that the custodians (HSBC Bank USA NA for GLD and JP Morgan Chase Bank NA London Branch for SLV) were regulated, but appeared to be unwilling to do anything about it other than to pass my letter on to "the supervisors of the relevant firms".

I’m usually skeptical of exchange-traded fund (ETF) launches that are preceded by a lot of hype; generally, the harder a company works to promote a new exchange-traded product, the less value there is to it. And for the better part of the month leading up to its launch, PIMCO Total Return Bond ETF (NYSE: BOND) garnered quite a bit of attention for being bond maven Bill Gross’s inaugural effort in the ETF space.

Paulson & Co., a multibillion-dollar hedge fund, helped select the mortgage-backed securities held by Abacus while at the same time, Paulson was planning on shorting it. This was all unbeknownst to Abacus buyers, since Goldman Sachs conveniently left out the details of Abacus' creators and their bet against the fund in the investment marketing materials. Ultimately, the case was settled for $550 million.

Mind the Leveraged ETF's 2012, They Might Kill your Portfolio! / Companies / Exchange Traded Funds

By: Willem_Weytjens

Best Financial Markets Analysis ArticleIn this article I will show you why it's wise to be careful with leveraged products, such as Proshares Ultra ETF's and Direxion 3x ETF etc... as they might KILL your portfolio!

Proshares states on its website:

Mind the Leverage

Each Short or Ultra ProShares ETF seeks a return that is either 3x, 2x, -1x, -2x or -3x of the return of an index or other benchmark (target) for a single day, as measured from one NAV calculation to the next. Due to the compounding of daily returns, ProShares' returns over periods other than one day will likely differ in amount and possibly direction from the target return for the same period. These effects may be more pronounced in funds with larger or inverse multiples and in funds with volatile benchmarks. Investors should monitor their ProShares holdings consistent with their strategies, as frequently as daily.

Dangers and Opportunities in Muni Bond ETFs Crash / Interest-Rates / Exchange Traded Funds

By: Ron_Rowland

Best Financial Markets Analysis ArticleBonds of all kinds took a beating over the last few months — ever since Ben Bernanke began hinting he would launch another “quantitative easing” money-printing program.

Ben was true to his word. And the QE2 program was announced on November 3. Interest rates shot up in the following weeks. That was bad news both for individual bondholders and bond exchange traded funds (ETFs).

Investor ETF Madness hits $1 Trillion / Stock-Markets / Exchange Traded Funds

By: PhilStockWorld

Best Financial Markets Analysis ArticleAfter adding $209Bn (26.3%) in total assets so far this year, the US ETF industry has passed the Trillion Dollar mark led by $31Bn of inflows into fixed income ETFs, of all things as well as $29Bn of inflows into emerging markets, and $21Bn into domestic.  Recent outflows have knocked commodity ETFs down to $11.4Bn, miles down from last year’s $32.6Bn inflow – rats leaving a sinking ship, perhaps?  That would be very bad news for the firm that bought up 90% of the LME copper supply recently.  Do ETF traders really know something or are they a lagging indicator?

Follow the Trend with Small-Cap Growth ETFs / Companies / Exchange Traded Funds

By: Ron_Rowland

Best Financial Markets Analysis ArticleWith exchange traded funds (ETFs), global stock markets can be sliced and diced in hundreds of different ways. You can invest by country, by geographic region, by industry sector, and by various combinations of all these.

Another way to look at the picture is by company style. Some stocks are more tilted toward growth and others toward value.

Investors Alert, Does Your ETF Own Derivatives? / Companies / Exchange Traded Funds

By: Ron_Rowland

Best Financial Markets Analysis ArticleWhat’s in your exchange traded fund (ETF)? The obvious answer is “stocks” if it is a stock ETF, and “bonds” if it is a bond ETF. That’s not always the case, though.

Some ETFs use derivative instruments like futures, options, and swaps. So is there any reason to worry?

First Month of Van Eck’s REMX ETF / Commodities / Exchange Traded Funds

By: Anthony_David

In late October, Van Eck Global launched the first listed exchange-traded fund (ETF) in the United States – the Market Vectors Rare Earth/Strategic Metals ETF (NYSE Arca:REMX), which aims to expose investors to companies involved in the production, refining, and recycling of rare earth/strategic metals. The fund seeks to reproduce, as far as possible, the price and yield performance of the Market Vectors Rare Earth/Strategic Metals Index (Index), which enables investors to track the overall performance of listed companies in that sector. To be listed in the Index, a company must earn over 50% of its revenue from ventures in the rare earth/strategic metals space.

Four Reasons to Invest in ETFs And Five Ways to Get Started / Companies / Exchange Traded Funds

By: Money_Morning

Best Financial Markets Analysis ArticleLarry D. Spears writes: A mere 15 years ago, selecting the right exchange-traded fund (ETF) was no big challenge. That's because the first ETF wasn't introduced until 1993, and the second didn't follow until 1995. Since then, however, the growth rate among these versatile investment vehicles has been exponential - so fast, in fact, that the monitoring firm Morningstar now tracks the performance of 854 ETFs, with new funds being added almost weekly.

By: Richard_Shaw

Best Financial Markets Analysis ArticleThe table image uses color coding to help visualize which key ETF categories are in the strongest and weakest price patterns as indicated by the stacking of the price and various moving averages to each other.

An ideal stacking would be for the price to be above the 20-day average, which would be above the 50-day average, which would be above the 100-day average, which would be above the 200-day average. The worst case would have the opposite stacking.

How to Build a Global Investment Portfolio Using ETFs / Companies / Exchange Traded Funds

By: Money_Morning

Best Financial Markets Analysis ArticleLarry D. Spears writes: It wasn't all that long ago that global investing was an activity that was restricted to only the wealthiest U.S. investors. If you weren't one of America's ultra-rich, you weren't able to access foreign markets.

That began to change in the 1950s, with the advent of international and global mutual funds, and access further expanded over the next three decades with the introduction of single-country closed-end funds. Today, thanks to the recent explosion in exchange-traded funds (ETFs), investing in overseas stocks is now almost as easy as targeting a given market sector here at home.

The Number of ETFs Exploding to Over 1,000 / Companies / Exchange Traded Funds

By: Ron_Rowland

Best Financial Markets Analysis ArticleAs I watch the exchange-traded fund (ETF) universe grow, I keep having flashbacks to the huge increase in the number of mutual funds in the 1990s.

Back then everyone wanted to own large cap growth funds. You could take your pick of hundreds in the category. A few were really good, a few really bad, and most were average. I saw frustrated investors simply give up trying to choose and throw their money at whatever was convenient. Usually it didn’t work out so well.

ETFs and the Flash Stock Market Crash / Stock-Markets / Exchange Traded Funds

By: Frank_Holmes

Best Financial Markets Analysis ArticleLiquidity is one of the key selling points for exchange-traded funds (ETFs), but the Dow Jones “flash crash” of May 6 shows how that supposed advantage can turn into a huge liability for investors.

A report this week from the SEC and the Commodities Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) found that ETFs accounted for the overwhelming majority of securities that fell at least 60 percent that day. Many of those ETFs fell all the way to $0.01 per share during trading.

All Crude Oil Is Similar, But Crude Oil ETFs Are Not / Commodities / Exchange Traded Funds

By: Ron_Rowland

Best Financial Markets Analysis ArticleYou may have noticed that crude oil prices plunged over the last few weeks. On May 3, the June crude oil futures peaked at more than $87. Then on Monday, May 17 the same contract slipped below $70. That’s a decline of about 20 percent in only ten market days!

Of course we could go back in history and point to some periods when oil prices went up just as quickly. What this illustrates is that — like many commodities — crude oil can be very volatile.

The Great Commodities Con, Dangers of Investing in ETF's, Exchange Traded Funds / Stock-Markets / Exchange Traded Funds

By: John_Mauldin

Diamond Rated - Best Financial Markets Analysis ArticleA quick introduction for this week's Outside the Box. This is from my London Partner Niels Jensen, talking about the problems with long only commodity funds. This is something I discuss frequently but have not written about in some time. Quite simply, many of the commodity ETFs do not deliver what they promise and in fact many of the inverse funds can lose you money even when you make the right macro call.

Niels gives us a very good explanation of why this is so. So for those of you who have "diversified" into commodity ETFs (not actively managed funds!) or are thinking about it you might really want to read this.

This year one of the leading niches has been financial services. That definitely wasn’t the case last year at this time, when many banks were teetering on the edge of failure. They survived (most of them, anyway) thanks only to government bailouts.

Gold, Oil and Natural Gas ETF Trading Report & Forecasts / Commodities / Exchange Traded Funds

By: Chris_Vermeulen

Best Financial Markets Analysis ArticleGold has provided two excellent trades for us this year; both had less than 3% downside risk. With any luck we will have another trade soon. Gold has been forming a large reverse head and shoulder pattern since early March and currently trying to form the right shoulder. If this pattern completes and the price breaks the neck line at the $99 level we should see a nice rally towards the $120 - $130 level.

Back on March 18, the 10-year Treasury bond yield dropped as low as 2.54 percent. This week it went above 3.90 — a huge move in less than three months. The same thing is happening in all but the very shortest maturities.

Portfolio Allocation Technical Analysis Tables Across 52 ETFs / Portfolio / Exchange Traded Funds

By: Richard_Shaw

Diamond Rated - Best Financial Markets Analysis ArticleComparing the charts for multiple funds can be challenging.  Visual memory is fleeting, and the sheer information complexity of chart patterns poses the problem of what and how to compare on the charts.

To reduce the extent of those problems, we collect 15 data points from each chart and post them in a table, then color code them red or green to aid in scanning the table.  By that method we can compare dozens of charts in a standardized way that is completely beyond our visual memory capabilities.

Rising Commodities, Falling Stock Markets & Risk Reward Ratio / Commodities / Exchange Traded Funds

The past few months have been absolutely crazy in the financial markets. Financial advisors and banks are taking a beating from both the market condition and clients as individuals around the world are losing 30+ of their investments. We have seen oil prices drop over $110 per barrel from the high (73% decline), and the US dollar tumbled down to 71 and rebounded to 88 (23% gain) all in the mater of months.

How to Trade the Stocks Bear Market DIA ,Gold, Silver and Crude Oil ETF's / Stock-Markets / Exchange Traded Funds

By: Chris_Vermeulen

Diamond Rated - Best Financial Markets Analysis ArticleBroad Market Trading Analysis
Last week the broad market slide lower on heavy volume as the DOW tries to hold the 8000 level. If this support level is broken then we could see another leg lower with the DOW sliding down to the 6500 level. The reason I am mentioning this is because gold surged higher on Friday with big volume as traders start to anticipate this drop as well as the drop in the USD which is currently at a short term resistance level. If the market starts to drop, then holding gold stocks may not be the best safe haven. When the market sells off it tends to pull all stocks with it, by holding GLD fund or physical gold, SLV fund or physical silver, and the USO fund or physical crude oil, you could have better returns on your investment trading the commodity rather than going long stocks in a bear market.

Proshares Ultrashort SPY Upleg Near Completion / Stock-Markets / Exchange Traded Funds

By: Mike_Paulenoff

Let's notice that after the Proshares Ultrashort SPY (AMEX: SDS) pulled back (to 82.88) during the first hour of trading, it climbed strongly to an intraday high at 87.11, which happens to be just shy of yest.'s rally peak at 87.65. The fact that the price structure failed to make a new high, and instead has backed away from the highs, suggests strongly that the upleg from the 1/06 low at 64.29 is at or is quickly nearing completion ahead of a meaningful decline.

Mike Paulenoff Forecasts for Gold, Oil & Stock Market / Stock-Markets / Exchange Traded Funds

By: Mike_Paulenoff

Best Financial Markets Analysis ArticleTechnical strategist Mike Paulenoff, author of MPTrader.com, shares his chartwork early Tuesday on gold, oil, and equity indices ahead of the Christmas holiday.

Gold: Although I have no desire to be exposed to the gold market over the holiday week, my work is setting up for a continuation to the downside of last week's initial pullback from 86.91 to 81.74 in the SPDR Gold Shares ETF (NYSE: GLD). At the very least, the GLD should retest 81.74, which if violated will trigger additional weakness that presses the ETF towards key near-term support at 80.00-79.00. That also happens to coincide with the area that is first of a series of unfilled up-gaps left behind during the early December upmove from 72.91 to 86.91.

ETF's Hit Harder by Credit Crisis Volatility than Indices - Yorba TV Show / Stock-Markets / Exchange Traded Funds

By: Anthony_Cherniawski

Best Financial Markets Analysis ArticleLast week was one of the most volatile weeks seen since 1987.  On Tuesday's show I warned that it was not a good place to go short, since my model suggested a rally by the end of the week.   A look at the chart showed a bullish wedge being formed (see the chart).  Usually a bullish wedge will retrace its total decline, which means that it may still rally up to 1300 to 1320.  However, I would not put my hopes too high on that possibility.  The move after that should be much more bearish.

Commodities ETF's Trading Freeze Due to AIG Fears / Commodities / Exchange Traded Funds

By: Mark_OByrne

Best Financial Markets Analysis ArticleGold fell slightly yesterday with gold down $3.60 to $778.40 but silver again had sharper falls and was down 54 cents to $11.02. Gold has again traded sideways in Asian trading but has risen in early European trading to $780/oz.

Gold's wealth preservation qualities are being felt with the precious metal remaining resilient despite volatility and sharp sell offs in many other markets. Gold is only marginally negative(some -1%) in the last month despite sharp falls in the majority of stock markets. Thus the pattern seen in recent years when gold trades sideways to slightly down in the short term when equities sell off aggressively and then outperforms equities in the weeks following sell offs is being seen again.

Crude Oil and Commodities Get Clobbered Whilst Equities Barely Changed / Commodities / Exchange Traded Funds

By: Mike_Paulenoff

Best Financial Markets Analysis ArticleWhat do you know, the ProShares UltraShort Oil & Gas ETF (AMEX: DUG) is going up, but the major equity market ETFs, like Q's, SPY, DIA, are barely going down! In other words, it is just the energy sector (XLE) and other commodity sectors, that are getting clobbered while the main equity sectors behave very well after a 4% advance. This is what I was thinking on Monday when I managed to buy the high of the DUG-- that the energy and commodity trades (the crowed ones like gold and oil) were about kaput on the upside, which should in theory reverse, sending the DUG above 42.20 into the 45.00-46.00 target zone.

Pharmaceuticals ETF Breaking Out / Stock-Markets / Exchange Traded Funds

By: Mike_Paulenoff

After 8 days of high-level consolidation at the high of its recent upleg off the August low at 73.09, the Pharmaceutical HLDRs (AMEX: PPH) appears to be breaking out to new highs and starting a new upleg. Today's close is very important. If the majority of the breakout upmove is preserved, then I expect the PPH to climb towards 81.50/80, and then to the 82.20 area. Let's notice that today's strength represents a thrust off of the rising 200 DMA, which usually triggers very powerful upmoves. At this juncture, only a decline that breaks below 79.80 will wreck today's constructive action.

Upside Reversal for US Homebuilders? / Stock-Markets / Exchange Traded Funds

By: Mike_Paulenoff

The SPDR S&P Homebuilders ETF (Amex: XHB) certainly has been impacted by the shift in the supply-demand conditions of the housing sector, the leveling out and reversal of home price appreciate, and the debt crisis, which have pressed the price of the ETF to Friday's low of 22.54 from 46.52 in April 2006. Why would I want to step in front of this powerful downtrend now?

MPTrader -Crude Oil Pressing Support Trendline / Commodities / Exchange Traded Funds

By: Mike_Paulenoff

Right now the US Oil Trust (AMEX: USO) is down about $0.80 and pressing against its June-Aug support line at 56.80, which if broken should trigger downside acceleration towards the next key support plateau at 54.75-54.20. Such a move will represent a 40-45% downside traverse across the bullish price channel -- and a "natural" support area where we might expect weakness in the USO to find new buying interest.

Today's weakness in the Financial Select Sector SPDR (AMEX: XLF) has pressed the financial ETF below all of my relevant "trading" moving averages, which I consider to be a sign of impending decline. However, let's notice that the price structure must break both its 1-year support line as well as its prior pivot low, which reside at 35.53, in order to trigger downside acceleration towards a test of the next important, intermediate-term pivot low, at 34.18 (from 3/14).

MPTrader Mid-Day Minute - Internet Holders Trust (HHH) Upside Breakout / Stock-Markets / Exchange Traded Funds

By: Mike_Paulenoff

I told our subscribers early this AM that I wanted to reduce exposure to the long side, especially with oil prices rocketing, and bond prices plummeting. However, when I see a chart pattern like the enclosed upside breakout in the Internet HLDRs (AMEX: HHH) from a two month bullish coil, I view it differently than a mature upleg in an instrument that likely will be much more vulnerable to the swings in oil and bonds-- and gyrations of the major equity averages.

Today's bigger than expected drawdown in gasoline inventories despite the build in crude has sparked a powerful upmove in the US Oil Trust (AMEX: USO) in the aftermath of yesterday's weakness and today's lower open. Let's notice that today's action represents a potentially significant key upside reversal session, which would argue that the near-term direction has reversed to the upside (again).

Into the Pool - ETF Skeptic / Stock-Markets / Exchange Traded Funds

By: Roger_Conrad

Here's a confession from a 20 years-plus industry veteran: I use investment conferences for more than making my points and chatting with current and prospective readers. I also like to scope out what the rest of the industry—including the competition—is doing, chiefly the products they're selling and the public's reception to them.

One of the most popular items at last week's Las Vegas Money Show was exchange traded funds (ETFs). It's not hard to see that these have captured investors' imagination, and dollars, during the past year. The “Wall Street Journal” now publishes what seems to be an ever-expanding page of ETFs that are offered by a growing array of financial houses anxious to cash in on the trend.
